There are some who believe that the name order should be Grace Carrie - not without some possible justification. This contributor has, upon receiving an edit request to change the name order, looked up the original birth record in Jefferson county. The original entry listed the birth on October 7, 1890 as only 'female', not uncommon in that era. Few changes to birth records are permitted in Iowa, and those that are made can only, legally, be done by the recording clerk at the direction of a judge. On Feb. 23, 1943, on this birth record, is a penned in name of "Grace Carrie" Lamansky. However, this change by the clerk, was done as an affidavit, NOT as an amendment. So while the intent may have been, in 1943, to record the birth name as Grace Carrie over just as being "female", the fact that it was not done as a formal amendment may, or may not, be significant. Without knowing the reason why this penned in change to the otherwise valid birth record was done as an affidavit by a clerk and not done as a formal amendment to the record, the legal effect for that change is at least somewhat questionable. Pending any clear information for clarification, it is the belief of this contributor (and that of the current county recorder) that the death record name order should be used, since it is a equally valid vital record. Therefore, the above mentioned name order for this memorial is being kept 'as is'. Of course, if any family member has documentation or other information to explain this situation, please contact this contributor for any updates to be made to this memorial. It is noted, however, that only "Grace" is used on the headstone inscription - but whether or not that means that the first name was/is "Grace" or simply that the "Carrie" part of the name was not part of her life, remains to be clarified. Some women drop the use of the first name in favor of their middle name, so that may be the case here. ------------------------- Fairfield Ledger Thursday, May 1, 1975 C. MINEART Dies At 84 BRIGHTON - Carrie Grace MINEART, 84, died at 6;20 p.m. Wednesday at Parkview Care Center in Fairfield where she had been a patient for three and a half years. Mrs. MINEART was born October 7, 1890 in Jefferson County, the daughter of John and Mary BUCK LAMANSKY. She was married to Henry W. MINEART Jan. 18, 1910. The deceased lived her entire life in the Brighton area. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society and the Brighton unit of American Legion Auxiliary. Prior to her marriage she taught school in Jefferson County. Surviving are eight sons,Sylvester of Fairfield, Leroy and Harold of Brighton, Curtis of Washington, David of Norwalk, Raymond of Falls Church, Fa.(sic), Maurice of Anandale, Va., and Maynard of Kenniwick, Wash.; Three daughters, Mrs. Paul McCLINTIC (sic. Christine Mary MINEART McCLINTIC) of Richland, Mrs. George ANDERSON (sic. Margaret MINEART ANDERSON) of Fairfield and Mrs. Roman GEVOCK (sic. Evelyn MINEART GEVOCK) of Pleasant Plain; 51 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and one sister, Ethel LAMANSKY of Los Angeles, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, four brothers and three sisters. Prayers for a Christian Wake will be at Gould Funeral Home in Brighton at 9 p.m., Friday. Funeral services will be Saturday, 10 a.m., at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Louis Leonhardt officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.
