Barrett Topeka State Journal, Monday, Nov. 24, 1924, page 10: Death Follows Accident Charles Barrett Dies in Hospital as Result of Injuries Charles Barrett, 18, of 321 Van Buren street, died Sunday night in a local hospital as the result of injuries sustained about midnight Saturday when the motor car in which he was riding turned over near Ashland avenue and Quinton boulevard. Reno Swartz, who rooms at the Central Y.M.C.A., and Ernest Recob, 1243 Lincoln, are in Stormont hospital suffering with brain concussions, but will probably recover unless further complications set in, according to physicians. Vincent Hammerli, 909 Lane street, was driving his car west on Ashland. As it rounded a jog in the street at Quinton boulevard, it was said, the driver turned it sharply to avoid hitting another car and crashed into the curb. The car turned over and was headed east when it came to a stop. Barrett's skull was fractured and he never regained consciousness. Hammerli and Alpheus Marlatte, 307 Tyler street, escaped without injury. An inquest probably will be held Tuesday, according to Dr. H.L. Clark, county coroner, to determine if Hammerli was guilty of criminal negligence. It has been said that the car was being driven at high speed. Barrett was employed at a grocery at 411 Jackson street. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.N. Barrett, 321 Van Buren street; a brother, Edward Bassett (sic), and a sister, Mrs. Dora Sooter, of Oklahoma City, Okla.
