He had been in poor health for some time, gradually failing since last fall, and was confined to his bed for eleven days, the cause of his death being due to the infirmities of old age. Charles Johnson was born March 25 [3], 1828, in Sjarsta [Tjärstad] socken, Linkopings Lan, Sweden. He was confirmed in the Lutheran church in Sweden and was married there to Anna Christina Moling, March 1, 1853. They came to America in the same year locating in Hardin Township, Webster County. In 1872 they moved to Marion Township, Hamilton County where they resided for twenty-two years, afterwards moving to Stratford, where they lived until the death of his wife in the year 1911. Since then he has resided with his youngest daughter, Mrs. John Eckstein. It is sixty-six years ago since deceased came to this country and he had lived all of that time in this immediate vicinity. He was one of the oldest living pioneer settlers of this community and it is needless to add that as such he has seen much of the history of this state and this town and community in the making. The many hardships of the early settler were endured by he and his wife and they helped to make the raw Iowa prairies of that day into the producing farms of today. They are very few, these old men, and they are passing rapidly. Soon there will be none of them left, but their work will ever live after them. Deceased is mourned by four sons and four daughters, all of whom with the exception of one reside in Stratford and community. They are: John Johnson of Arnold's Park, Iowa; Allen, Swan, Charles; Mrs. Alfred (Louisa) Poulson, Mrs. John (Hattie) Andrews; Mrs. Fred (Josephine) Anderson and Mrs. John (Mary) Eckstein. Besides these he leaves twenty-one grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren, and a large number of old neighbors and friends. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon last week at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Andrews, conducted by Rev. C.A. Callerstrom and the remains were laid to rest in the South Marion Cemetery.
