One of the saddest occurrences that has ever taken place in Corning was the sudden death on Tuesday, October 15, 1895, of Charles K. Bixler, assistant principal of the Corning High School. Mr. Bixler had been in bad shape for some weeks and spent last week at his home in Douglas township. He returned and resumed duties Monday morning and shortly after twelve o'clock, in conversation with Z. T. Widener, a member of the school board, stated he was feeling better than for a long time and had bright hopes for recovering from the threatening signs of quick consumption. He started to his boarding house, Rev. A. B. De Water's and had gotten about half way home when he was seized with a rupture of an artery in the lungs and a terrible hemorrhage ensued. When he reached the gate the blood was flowing in a stream from mouth, ears, and nostrils. Mr. DeWater saw him and went to his assistance. He remarked, "Mr. DeWater, this is something serious." Dr. Glover happened along at this moment and they assisted him to his room and in less than five minutes he breathed his last. The funeral occurs today at two o'clock p.m. conducted by Rev. f. C. Watkins assisted by Rev. DeWater, at the home of his parents. Interment in the Nodaway Cemetery. The schools are closed today in respect of his memory. Charles K. Bixler was born in this county June 20th, 1879 in Brooks, the son of John and Savilla Bixler. He had high ambitions and aspirations in life and was as indefatigable student. He was a graduated of Highland Park college and had finished the junior year in classical course of Nebraska State University when he received a call to take the assistant principalship of our schools. His persistent study had weakened him and symptoms of consumption were apparent, but he forged ahead and was establishing a record for thorough work in his classes in our schools. It is indeed and that he should be taken in this way and not be permitted to round out the career of usefulness which was so promising. The Union tenders its deep sympathy to his bereaved family.
