Bearce, 98, of Hiawatha, died Sunday afternoon, Jan. 30, 2000, at the Hiawatha Community Hospital, where he had been a patient for several days. Previous to his admission to the hospital, he had been a resident of Oak Ridge Acres in Hiawatha since 1994. He was born May 22, 1901 at Clarinda, Iowa, the eldest son of Leonard and Lena Thompson Bearce, and moved to Brown County with his family at the age of two. He attended the Victory Country School, north of Hiawatha for eight years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Travelin Tepee's Camping Club, both of Hiawatha. He and his wife were the "sweethearts" of the club, as they always saw that everyone arrived safe and had a place to park their camper. Charles was married to Hazel Mae Davis on June 11, 1924, at the home of her parents near Hiawatha. They farmed and raised livestock in Brown County, in the Powhattan-Hiawatha areas all of their married life, before retiring and moving to Hiawatha in the mid 1970's. For 20 years, they spent their winters in McAllen, Texas. She preceded him in death Dec. 10, 1995. He was also preceded in death by a son, Gary Bearce in November 1989; two brothers, Jim Bearce and Walter Bearce, and a sister, Mabel Puvogel. Survivors include two daughters, Pat Aller, rural Hiawatha, and Joan Erickson, Highland; three brothers, Leland Bearce, Hiawatha, Carl Bearce, Topeka, and Howard Bearce, Atchison; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
