Nelson was born June 9, 1909, on a homestead 10 miles south of Potter, Neb., to Vernon and Mary (Larson) Nelson. He was raised there as the oldest of eight children. Nelson attended a one-room schoolhouse for nine years and then went to Potter for three years to high school. His father died in January 1928. Nelson then worked with his mother and brothers and sisters for 15 years. In 1943 he purchased a place of his own, a cattle ranch west of Peetz in the Chimney Canyons area. On Sept. 22, 1946, he married Werdna (Rieke) at Sterling Methodist Church. The Nelsons raised Hereford cattle on the ranch until 1979, when they retired and moved to Sterling. Nelson was a member of Farmers Union for more than 60 years, served on school boards in Colorado and Nebraska for more than 23 years, was a member of Faith United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge in Sidney, Neb. After moving to Sterling, Nelson was active with Logan County Senior Citizens Club and American Association of Retire Persons. Survivors include his wife, of the home; a son, Jim of Padroni; two daughters, Janet Mathewson of Sterling and Jane Culver of Elsie, Neb.; three brothers, Virgil of Potter, Kermit of Dalton, Neb., and Warren of Sidney; four sisters, Marion Jacobs and Delores Shanholtz of Plattsmouth, Neb., Carol Spencer of Potter, and Mildred Terman of Sidney; and nine grandchildren. Tennant Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
