THE MURDER OF CONDUCTOR HINE BY A COWBOY. A tragedy was enacted in McFarland Thursday which resulted in the death of a former resident of Topeka. When the Rock Island freight train arrived in that place, a number of cowboys were out on a lark. They were enjoying themselves after the manner usually ascribed to that somewhat fictitious personage, and were firing revolver shots about promiscuously. C. L. Hine, car repairer of the Rock Island paid no attention to the disturbance about the depot, but remained in the caboose, where he was calmly seated reading a letter. While thus occupied, Rattlesnake Jim, one of the cowboys, fired a shot through the car window. The careless act stained the reckless man’s hands with a few being’s blood, and made of him a murderer; for the bullet, sent upon its course at random, struck the head of the reading man, passed clear through the skull and left behind it a corpse to fall forward upon the floor; for death was instantaneous. The news that a murder had been committed quickly, brought the shooting affair to an end and medical aid was called for. But all that remained to be done was to arrange the dead body and prepare for its shipment home. A message was sent to Topeka notifying friends of the fatal occurrence, and yesterday the remains were brought home over the Rock Island. They were taken charge of by Undertaker Gibbs, and conveyed to the home of W. H. Forbes, northwest of the city, a brother-in-law of the deceased. The funeral will be held this morning at 10 o’clock. Mr. Hine was 39 years of age. The man who did the shooting is known as Rattlesnake Jim. He walked from McFarland to Alma and has not yet been arrested. Hine has been living near Silver Lake for a year past, and leaves a wife and three children. —Topeka Daily Capital (Topeka, KS), April 7, 1889, p 8, c 2. The funeral of C. L. Hine, who was accidently shot at McFarland on Thursday, was held at the residence of his brother-in-law, W. H. Forbes, northwest of the city, yesterday afternoon.
