Description	:	WAUNETA -- Clyde Gilbert Hoff, 84, died Sunday (April 19, 2009) at Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home. He was born July 19, 1924, to Amil Walter and Clara Alzada (Burham) Hoff in Wauneta. He grew up in Wauneta attending school and working in his father's grocery store where he learned to serve in the community. Read More	WAUNETA -- Clyde Gilbert Hoff, 84, died Sunday (April 19, 2009) at Heritage of Wauneta Nursing Home. He was born July 19, 1924, to Amil Walter and Clara Alzada (Burham) Hoff in Wauneta. He grew up in Wauneta attending school and working in his father's grocery store where he learned to serve in the community. After graduating from Wauneta High School with the class of 1942, he attended the University of Nebraska in Lincoln. He entered into the U.S. Army in the summer of 1944. He served in the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign in the Philippine Liberation on the islands of Luzon and Cebu, as a member of the 132nd Infantry Regiment of the famous Americal Division. Also he served in the Army of Occupation of Japan in the 513th M.P. Motor Division from September 1945 to the time of his honorable discharge in November 1946. He had reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and was awarded a bronze star for service in the Philippines. After his military service, he joined his father and brother in farming and ranching north and south of Wauneta. Later the partnership separated and he farmed and ranched for himself until retiring in 2000. On June 15, 1948, he married Lois Joan Hayes in the Wauneta Methodist Church. They made their home in Wauneta for almost three years before moving north of town where they lived for 58 years. He served for 33 years on the Wauneta Coop Oil Board of Directors, 15 of those years as the chairman and 13 years on the Wauneta School Board and was a charter member of the former Wauneta J.G.'s and their second president. He was also a member of the American Legion, a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), a member of the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star Chapter of Wauneta and later of Imperial, as well as a member of the Eagles of Imperial and was a life-member of the Elks Lodge of McCook. He was a leader for the Cub Scouts in Wauneta for four years and served three years on the Tri-Trails District Council for Boy Scouts. He was also chairman for the Wauneta Methodist Church board for for years, and a life-member of the church for more than 50 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Lisa in 1961; brother, Homer and wife, Emma; sister, Evelyn Acton; brother-in-law, Larry Hayes of Modesto, Calif.; and sister-in-law, Charlotte Hayes. Survivors include his wife, Lois of Wauneta; sons, Chris and Tracy Paine of Bozeman, Mont., and Stuart and wife, Karla of Lincoln; brothers-in-law, Ronald Acton of Wauneta and David J. Hayes of El Segundo, Calif.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services were today at United Methodist Church in Wauneta with the Rev. Judy Dye officiating. Interment followed in Riverside Cemetery at Wauneta. Memorials may be given in his name. Liewer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
