Read More	Cloud County Cemetery Book, Volume 4, page 135 owner: Conrad & Louise Romeiser ****************** Glasco Sun, April 19, 1923, page 1: Conrad Romeiser Conrad Romeiser was born in Hessen, Nassau, Germany, November 3, 1846, and died at the home of his oldest daughter, Mrs. Joe Talley, near Glasco, Kansas April 15, 1923 aged 76 years, 5 months, and 12 days. His father served his native country twelve years and was discharged because of disability. His mother died when he was but an infant, leaving himself and one brother. Mr. Romeiser was educated in the schools of his native country and just prior to attaining his majority, set sail for America, his destination being St. Louis, where his brother had preceded him. He arrived in Chicago with one dollar and his transportation. After borrowing one dollar from a stranger with whom he had traveled, he continued the journey. In Germany he had served as an apprentice and learned the butcher's trade. But being lured to the country, he became attached to the rural life, which resulted in much achievement as an agriculturist, breeder and feeder of livestock. He earned his first salary as a farm hand near Waterloo, Illinois. While there he heard the call of the West, and in 1869 he and his brother emigrated to Kansas and settled in the Solomon Valley near Glasco. After selecting their homesteads they returned to Solomon City and walked on to Junction City, filed on their claims and walked back to their new homes. In the spring of 1870 Mr. Romeiser walked back to Junction City where he secured work on the Missouri-Kansas- Texas railroad, which was then under construction. During the winter of '69-70 he stayed with two neighbors, the Studt Brothers, who were batching on their claims. He frequently said, "I had no place to lay my head, and they took me in for God's sake." In 1870 he built the first residence on his claim, which was a Kansas dugout in a creek bank. He frequently would build up a big fire, that the neighbors might know that "Coony" as he much enjoyed being called, was at home. In the same year he had the first sod broken on the homestead. The next year he succeeded in getting more done, and each succeeding year added a little to the improvement of the home. The first five years he owned no livestock, but worked for his neighbors and thus secured funds to promote his own work. He was married in 1878 to Miss Caroline Gnatkowsky who was also a native of Germany, and who came with her parents to America in 1871, and to Kansas in 1877. To this union were born eight children, of whom six survive: Herman, of Stockton, Kansas; Henry, Mrs. Margaret Talley, Mrs. Mary Smail, and Mrs. Leonora Kellogg of Glasco; and Miss Louise of Wichita, Kansas; and two sons by a second marriage, Theodore and Carl, of Portis, Kansas. He was raised in the Lutheran faith and lived a life in keeping with what, in his judgment, was the great duty of one who attains a good citizenship, which is summed up in the following: industry, frugality and honesty. He was a good financier, a hard worker and honest to a penny, and in the end of his earthly career, we pass one more milestone in the history of a generation. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, at the Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Pett. Interment was made in the Glasco Cemetery. ****************** According to census records, in 1910 Conrad was living in Lawrence, Osborne County, Kansas, and listed as divorced. In 1912 his first wife, Caroline, left the farm in Cloud County and moved to Glasco.
