Huddle was a radio personality at KAHI, Auburn, California, KODY, North Platte, WOW, Omaha and WJAG, Norfolk, Nebraska, one of the first NBC affiliates and the oldest family owned radio station in the nation. Huddle was a radio personality at KAHI, Auburn, California, KODY, North Platte, WOW, Omaha and WJAG, Norfolk, Nebraska, one of the first NBC affiliates and the oldest family owned radio station in the nation. In the 1930s and 40s, Huddle was heard coast to coast. Huddle interviewed Olympian Jesse Owens, Joe Louis and Marian Anderson. With a transmitter on his back, Huddle pioneered man on the street interviews. At the North Platte Canteen, he interviewed soldiers traveling by train while wife Lorraine fed them at World War II's largest canteen. This barnstormer flew wing walkers and herded crows and coyotes for Nebraska farmers. Huddle made history saving a plane and himself after landing a plane missing one wheel in a haystack. Self taught on aerodynamics, navigation, and flight theory, Huddle headed the Commerce Department's Civilian Pilot and the Navy CAA-WTS flight instruction school at North Platte. He taught the Nationalist Chinese how to fly and maintain airplanes at LAX airport. After the war, Huddle was a respected speaker who wrote a national column for Industrial Distribution News and in retirement he wrote a column for the Auburn Sentinel. He worked 36 years as a purchasing agent at Andrews Hardware in Los Angeles ordering pieces for Mel Torme's and Frank Sinatra's elaborate toy train layouts. Retiring to Auburn, California, Huddle gave walking tours of Old Town Auburn, the Bernhard Museum and Placer County Museum for 20 years. He spent 25 years volunteering in E.V. Cain Middle School's classrooms and visiting juvenile offenders inspiring them with his history tales. Born April 23, 1916 in Battle Creek, Nebraska. Married Velma Lorraine Huddle December 5, 1943 in Randolph, Nebraska. Died May 30, 2009 in Roseville, California. Preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Lorraine (Eike) Huddle, parents Robert Cable and Nellie Bly (Craig) Huddle, and brother, Francis of Huntington Park, Calf. He is survived by son, Robert Huddle, and grandsons, Thomas and Roger of Rancho Cordova, Calif. Memorial Service: Tuesday, June 16 at 10 a.m. at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way, Auburn, CA. Private burial to follow at New Auburn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to E.V. Cain Middle School, 150 Palm Avenue or Placer County Museums, 101 Maple Street, Auburn, CA 95603 Published in Gold Country Media Newspapers from June 12 to June 14, 2009
