"Tony" Curtis, 88, of Hiawatha, died Monday morning, Jan. 30, 2006, at Maple Heights Nursing Home, where he had been a resident for over three years. Tony was born in Stella, Neb., on Feb. 21, 1917, one of four children born to Tone and Dolly Hager Curtis. He lived in the southeast Nebraska and northeast Kansas area all of his life. He grew up in the Salem-Stella, Neb., area, where he attended schools prior to graduating from Salem High School. In his early years, he worked for Amos Hardware, in Hiawatha, installing coal and gas furnaces. Tony also did custom hay bailing and truck hauling for area farmers. In later years, in addition to farming, he worked for Jack's Camper Sales, of Hiawatha. He married Thelma I. Bruning, on Oct. 19, 1940, in Hiawatha. They farmed near the Nebraska and Kansas state line for a number of years, prior to moving to Hamlin. In the early 1950s, they moved north of Hiawatha, where they farmed and raised livestock. He and Thelma also wallpapered professionally for area resident for a number of years. They retired and moved to town in the early 1980's. She died July 5, 2000. Mr. Curtis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, of Hiawatha. When his children were younger, he was active with the 4-H Club. Through the years, Tony was known for calling square dances in the area. He was a longtime member of IOOF Lodge, of Hiawatha. He was a former member of BPOE 1741, Hiawatha Elks Lodge, Hiawatha Saddle Club, the Traveling Tepees and the Hiawatha Camping Club. He enjoyed camping and fishing. Survivors include two sons, Stan Curtis, and wife, Harriett, of Hiawatha, and Burdette "Tony" Curtis, and wife, Judy, of Kansas City, a daughter, Linda Jimeson, and husband, Art of Hiawatha, a brother, Carl Curtis, of LaCrosse, Wisc., five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Tony was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Arlene Kolb and Faye Tisdel. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church, of Hiawatha.
