Curtis, 81, of Hiawatha, died shortly after arrival at the Hiawatha Community Hospital late Wednesday evening, July 5, 2000. Thelma was born February 8, 1919 on a farm near Robinson, the daughter of George Edward and Cordia Overfield Bruning and had lived in this area nearly all of her life. She attended Mount Hope Country Grade School north of Robinson and had attended Hiawatha High School. Mrs. Curtis was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hiawatha and through the years, had been very active within the church. She was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge #271 of Hiawatha. She married Donnal "Tony" Curtis, October 19, 1940 at Hiawatha. They farmed in this area most of their life until retiring and moving to town in the early 1980's. He survives. Also surviving are a daughter Linda Jimeson and husband Art of Hiawatha, two sons Stanley Curtis and wife Harriett, also of Hiawatha, Burdette Curtis and wife Judy of Kansas City, Kansas; five grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and six step-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister Helen Grathwohl, and a brother Rex Bruning. Funeral services are planned for 10:30 Saturday morning, July 8, at the First Presbyterian Church in Hiawatha. Pastor Boyd Bonebrake will officiate. Interment will follow at the Mount Hope Cemetery, Hiawatha. —The Hiawatha Daily World (Hiawatha, KS) Fri. July 7, 2000, p.2.
