She came of age when there were no... Read More	Dorothy "Dot" Elizabeth Shideler Porubsky passed away at her home on February 17, 2013 in Topeka, at the young age of 91. She was born February 13, 1922 in McCune, KS to Floyd Quinter and Hazel Mae (Hartman) Shideler. She attended schools in the McCune and West Mineral area. Dorothy led a life of quiet strength. She was the embodiment of the American spirit and cherished her freedom and independence. She lived thru all the defining events of the 20th Century. Her life was not an easy road. She came of age when there were no handouts, only hard work, determination, sacrifice and the belief that tomorrow would be a brighter day. She endured great family hardship during the depression and dust bowl years resulting in her having to assume the role of parent to her younger siblings. She acted as a surrogate mother and father and completed high school all while working the family farm when teams of horses were still used to pull the farm equipment. Thru years of hard work and sheer determination, she and her siblings kept their family intact and saved the family farm. She went on to attend Pittsburg State Teachers College in Pittsburgh, KS and achieved a teaching certificate. Miss Shideler became a teacher in the local rural school system, teaching in one-room schoolhouses. Her favorite story was about taking a lamb to school and keeping it in the back of the school room. As a reward for good behavior, each pupil would be allowed their turn to bottle feed the lamb. During the war years, she worked in the Parsons Ordnance Plant to supplement the family income. Following the war years, she moved to Topeka, KS looking for better employment opportunities. She was hired by Whelans Lumber where she met her future husband Walter Porubsky. They were married on June 8, 1948 and went on to raise seven children. While raising her family she also worked at JC Penney s, Blue Cross and Blue Shield and American Yearbook. In the 1970 s, she went back to school and attended the Kaw Area Vo-Tech School with her son Charles. She earned a certificate in medical transcription. She went on to work for St. Francis Hospital transcribing doctor s medical records. She found the job and the people very rewarding. She retired from St. Francis after 20 years of service. She enjoyed cooking for her family, crocheting, making baby blankets, and socializing with family and friends. She was blessed with a talent for cooking, sewing and playing the piano. She enjoyed jazzing up songs. Some of her favorite pieces included the Black Hawk Waltz, Star of the East and numerous hymns she learned as a child. Dorothy was a shining example of the character that defines the Greatest Generation. She instilled in her family her quiet strength and traditional American values. Those of us who were touched by her were given a gift we can never repay. Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband (Walter) March 18, 1992. Her Mom (Hazel), Dad (Floyd), brother (Charles Shideler), and sister (Edith Crispino). Survivors include her two daughters; Pamela Porubsky and Patricia (Ivan) Schmidt, both of Topeka, five sons; Robert (Mary) Porubsky, and Paul (Arlene) Porubsky, both of Topeka, Richard Porubsky, St. Peters MO, Gary (Mary) Porubsky, Lafayette LA, and Charles Porubsky, Rocklin, CA. Siblings: Florence Worland, Margaret Niedfeldt, Frances Ann (Dean) Perkins, Harold (Joanne) Shideler and Pauline Morris. Six grandchildren: Steven Porubsky (Shauna), Christine McKee (Andy), Katelyn Porubsky, Alexandra Porubsky, Corey Porubsky, and Natalie Schmidt. Three great-grandchildren: Landan and Austin Porubsky, Lachlan McKee and many nieces and nephews. A rosary will be prayed Friday, February 22 at Davidson Funeral Home at 6 P.M., with visitation to follow from 6:30-8:00 P.M. She will lie in state from noon to 8:00 P.M. Friday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Most Pure Heart of Mary Church, 3601 SW 17th Street, on Saturday , February 23 at 10:00 A.M., burial will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
