Description	:	John Lester George, son of John and Ida George, was born March 1, 1906, at Norton, Kas. He passed away June 30, 1959, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Concordia, Kans., at the age of 53 years, 4 months. Early in his childhood the family moved to Chester, then to Gentry, Ark., and later to Mulberry, Kans., where graduated from high school. Early in his childhood the family moved to Chester, then to Gentry, Ark., and later to Mulberry, Kans., where graduated from high school. He attended Pittsburg Teachers College one year and taught school for a year before entering Kansas State College in the fall of 1928. He graduated from the School of Veterinary Medicine in 1932, with high honors, including membership in Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. George entered veterinary practice in Chester in 1932 and was still practicing here at the time of his death. He interrupted his practice for 18 months in 1934-35 to work with the U.S. Dept. of Agriculture in Oklahoma and Indiana. He was united in marriage with Guila Huckins, May 1, 1935. They have one son, Richard Allen, of the home. A member of the Nebraska State Veterinary Medical Association since 1933, he served as a member of the executive board for two years and as president of the organization in 1950. He was appointed to the State Examing (sic) Board in 1950 and served two terms in that capacity. He was also a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association. In 1953, Dr. George was appointed Nebraska State Veterinarian and served in that capacity until resigning due to ill health in 1958. He served as a member of both the State and National Brucellosis (sic) committee and as a member of the National Leptrospirosis (sic) Committee. He was serving on these committees at the time of his death. His passing will be mourned by many professional friends over the state and nation. Gov. Robert Crosby commissioned him an Admiral in the Nebraska Navy in 1954 for dedicated service rendered the state. Dr. George was active in local civic affairs, having served as president of the Chester Community Club, and Chester Lions Club. He was a member of the Hebron Rotary Club and Chester Masonic Lodge No. 239. He served eight years on the Chester Village Board and was Mayor of Chester for four years and also served on the Chester School Board several years. For the past ten years he has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Chester State Bank. He was a member of the Chester Methodist Church, being chairman of the official board at present. He was also a member of the Board of Trustees. He taught a Sunday School class of boys for several years and was at present teaching an adult class. He enjoyed sports, being an enthusiastic hunter and fisherman, and a fan of all team sports. For years he umpired baseball games in this section and had served as a team manager. He was preceded in death by his parents, a half-sister, Minnie; and a brother, Gerald, who died in military service in World War II. Those surviving include his wife, Guila; son, Richard Allen; a sister, Mrs. Mildred Huckins; two brothers, Lloyd of Detroit, Mich., and Lyle of Grand Island; half brother Lee George of Belleville, Ks. Several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held, Friday morning, July 3, 1959 in the Methodist Church in Chester with the Rev. Duane Hutchinson officiating. Rev. Richard Nesmith was the soloist and accompanied by Mrs. Floyd Haifleigh. Honorary casket bearers were: E.P. Anderson, DVM; P.R. Noller, DVM; C.B. Schwab, DVM; L.C. Shaw, DVM, and John Todd. Casket bearers were: Ray Peake, P.A. Clabaker, DVM; E.L. Metcalf, DVM; Eugene Nesmith, Dewey Van Cleef and R.W. Wilson. Interment was made in the Chester cemetery (sic) with the Bachelor-Faulkner-Dart Funeral service in charge.
