MOREY PASSED AWAY ON SATURDAY Has Been Connected With State Commission for 14 Years The State Conservation Commission lost one of its trusted and long time employees Saturday with the death of Edgar E. Morey of Orleans. Mr. Morey had been employed at the state game and fish hatcheries for a period of 14 years an was probably as familier with the conservation work as any of the men connected with that branch in the Iowa Great Lakes region. Mr. Morey had been ill with heart trouble about a year ago and on several different occasions since then had been confined to bed for periods of time. Saturday afternoon he accompanied Mrs. Morey to town from Orleans to have a check up by his doctor at 2 o'clock, Mrs. Morey went to the home of her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Stephenson across the street from the doctors office and he was to join her there. He had complained of not feeling well but had not wanted to tell the doctor for fear he would be again ordered to bed. Upon his arrival at the Stephenson home he became very ill and the doctor was called and he passed away shortly after 2:35 p.m.. The death occured just a half hour befor his sister, Mrs. Wm. H. Pagel of Minneapolis, Minn., arrived by bus for a surprise visit. Had the bus arrived on time, Mrs. Pagel would have reached Spirit Lake just befor his death. Funeral services were held at the Presbyterian church Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. George Cox conducting the service. Music was furnished by Mrs. K. B. Welty and Mrs. Lloyd Dowd with Mrs. H. E. Ilsley as accompanist. Members of Timpe Post, American Legion, attended the service in a body and officiated at the military burial services at Lakeview Cemetery. Bearers for the post were Lt. Jack Bedell and A/C Glenn Carver, who were home on furlough from their duties. Pallbearers were Mr. Morey's co-workers, Neil Nelson, Parker Dunham, Seth Shepard, Earl Rose, Charles O'Farrell and Bruce Reed. Out of town relatives and friends attending the service were; D. F. Wright of Moscow, Idaho, and Mrs. Wright, M/Sgt. Maurice Wright and wife of Rapid City, S. Dak., Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Pagel of Minneapolis, Mr. and Mrs. L. W. Bahl of Spencer, A. T. Heaverlo of Spencer, Mr. and Mrs. James Heaverlo and Louis of Jackson and Mr. and Mrs. John Schwalenberg of Webster City. Edgar Eugene Morey was born November 5, 1892 at Compton, Ill., and passed away on Saturday, July 1, 1944 at Spirit Lake at the age of 51 years, 7 months and 26 days. He was the son of the Late Mr. And Mrs. Mason L. Morey. When he was a child the family moved to Casey, Iowa and 35 years ago moved to Spirit Lake. Mr. Morey served in World War I. Shortly before the Armistice he was sent to New York for embarkation, and became ill there and was not able to go across. The Armistice was signed while he was confined to a hospital there. He was a member of Timpe Post No. 23, American Legion of Spirit Lake. On March 6, 1922 he was united in marriage to Mrs. Mary Bowie. He is survived by his wife and daughter, Margaret Stephenson, and two sisters, Miss Mollie Morey of this City and Mrs. Wm H. Pagel of Minneapolis. Also surviving are a large number of nephews and nieces and other relatives. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother, Franklyn who died in infancy; Harry Morey killed in an auto accident near Arnolds Park, and three sisters, Addie Smith Stokes, Maude Wright and Mable Martinson. *The Spirit Lake Beacon, July 6, 1944 ---------------------
