Read More	Topeka Capital-Journal, The (KS) — Monday, October 20, 2003 Edgar J. Gay was born May 21, 1917, to Alex and Eugenia Gay, of Clyde. He passed away in Austin, Texas, on Friday, Oct. 17, 2003. Survivors include a daughter, Patricia A. Green and husband, E. Ray Green, Buda, Texas, and their children, Sandra L. Patino and her husband, Homer Patino III, and Steven R. Green and his fiance, Heather Owens. Edgar was born number 10 of 12 children. He is survived by two sisters, Marie Bailey and husband, Glenn Bailey, Concordia, and May Buck, Topeka; and one brother, Albert Gay and wife, Bobbie Gay, Belton, Mo.; and numerous nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren. Ed earned a football scholarship to Washburn University in 1935. He was their quarterback from 1935 to 1939. During that time, he met Winifred "Pat" Hassler, who he married in 1940. Ed was drafted in August 1943, and served in the Rainbow Division of the 311 Field Artillery Battalion, 7th Army, seeking action in the Cherbourg Campaign until the end of the war. Returning to Kansas, he went to work at Winter General VA Hospital as a Corrective Therapist (a division of physical therapy). He worked his way up to chief of the department where he served until he retired 30 years later at the age of 55. Ed turned to golf, which he played daily at the public golf course for the next 20 years. He gained some notoriety when his picture appeared in the Topeka Daily Capital entitled "He sings while he birdies." He quit golf only after developing heart problems. Ed and Pat were also members of the Moose Lodge and could be seen dancing the night away every Saturday night for many years. Both Ed and Pat developed senility in their elder years. Pat passed away in January 2000, after which Ed moved to Texas to be with his daughter, Patty, and her family. After a two week bought with pneumonia, he died of congestive heart failure. His body will lie in state from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kevin Brennan Family Funeral Home, 29th and Urish, with interment in the mausoleum at Mount Hope Cemetery following.
