Martin was born April 23, 1911, in Bloomfield, the son of James William and Olga Dabney Martin. He grew up in the Bloomfield community and graduated from Bloomfield High School. He graduated from the College of Pharmacy in Des Moines. He owned and operated the Martin Drug Store from 1937 until 1986, when his son Nick assumed ownership. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Alta. On Nov. 17, 1950, he married Doris Willson at Council Bluffs. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, the Fairfield Elks Lodge, Fairfield Golf and Country Club, and served on the board of trustees of Parsons College and the board of directors of First National Bank. Surviving are his wife; two sons, Nick of Palm City, Fla., John of Cincinnati, Ohio; a daughter, Christine Martin Robinson of Rochester, N.Y.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A brother, Darrell, preceded him in death.
