Lang Edward Lang Loses Life In attempt To Rescue His Son Rae From Drowning Near Wausa, Nebraska Mills County relatives and friends were greatly shocked last week to hear of the tragic death of Edward Lang and son Rae former well known residents of this county south of Hastings. The death occurred Thursday evening, July 15 and word reached relatives at Emerson early next morning. The deceased man's brothers Walter and Charles and sister Miss Pearl Lang left at once for the scene of the disaster. The details of the tragedy as nearly as we could learn were as follows: It seems that the creek, a small stream near their home had been swollen by the rains until it was out of its banks and the pasture land was under water. The cows had gone across the stream and were kept over on the other side by the high water and not coming home in the evening. Mr. Lang and his son Rae started out after them on horseback. The boy rode across the stream but before lie reached the shore his horse went under and carried the lad down. Mr. Lang quickly jumped in and swam after the lad but after reaching him they suddenly, both sank. As Mr. Lang was an excellent swimmer it is supposed that he must have been taken with cramps or some thing of that sort. A little thirteen, year old boy staying at the Lang home was the only witness of the tragedy. Help was soon summoned and willing hands went to work to find the bodies. That of Mr. Lang was recovered about midnight and the other about four o'clock next morning. The remains were brought to Emerson Saturday afternoon and the funeral held Sunday afternoon from the Methodist church at three o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. H. M. Bettenhousen pastor of the Methodist church assisted by Rev. E. C. Seabright of the Presbyterian church. A large concourse of friends gathered to attend the last sad rites for Mr. Lang was well and favorably known to all in that community. There were many beautiful floral offerings. Edward Lang was born on the old home farm south east of Emerson, May 28, 1877. Here he grew to manhood and on February 16, 1898 was united in marriage with Miss Jennie Barnes of Hastings. To them were born three children, Olive who died in infancy, Rae whose death has just been recorded and Harry who with sorrowing wife survives him. He lived in this vicinity until two years ago when he moved to Wausa, Nebr., where he has since resided. A sad feature of the tragedy was the fact that Mrs. Lang was away from home at the time having taken a trip to the western coast with her mother. They succeeded in locating her, however, at Laurel, Mont, where she was visiting her brothers Herbert and Robert Barnes on her return trip, and she reached here Saturday evening. Out of town friends who came in to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Carl Knowles of Scotts Bluffs, Nebr., Mrs. Mary Swadley of Palmer, Nebr. and Herbert Barnes and wife and Robert Barnes of Laurel, Mont. Mrs. Lang and the family desires through the columns of this paper to express their heartfelt gratitude and thanks to the many friends for their kindness and sympathy in the hour of bereavement and especially to those who were so kind as to give up their own teams on the day of the that the family might use them.
