Music was furnished b Mrs. Horace Greenwood, pianist and Frederick Larson, soloist, who sang, “Beyond The Sunset,” “Going Down The Valley” and “Safe In The Arms Of Jesus.” The following obituary was read: Walter Albert Lang, only surviving member of the late John and Catherine Lang’s family of nine children, was born on a farm northwest of Emerson on February 1, 1872 and departed this life in the rest home east of Glenwood, where he had made his home for the past two years on July 9, 1964. He attended school at the Forester Country School and the West Normal School in Shenandoah until it burned down. On December 23, 1896, he was united in marriage to Annie Margaret White at the home of her parents. To this union seven children were born. In his youth he joined the Asbury Methodist Church and later transferred to the Champion Hill Presbyterian Church south of Emerson in which he took an active part. Most of his life was pent in farming in Mills County except for two years at Gage, Oklahoma; two years at Los Angeles, California, where he worked at Douglas Aircraft and 18 months at Wiggins, Mississippi. He was a kind and loving husband and father and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1952, twin sons, Orville in infancy and Everett in 1955, and a daughter, Barbara Ann in 1938. He leaves to cherish his memory two daughters, Mrs. Gladys Evans, Malvern, Mrs. Elaine Archer, Logan; two sons, Worley and Roy both of Council Bluffs; 27 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Interment was made in the Malvern Cemetery. Walter Lang wed Annie Margaret (Maggie) White, daughter of Frederick White and Martha Watts White on December 23, 1896 at the White Homestead southwest of Emerson. Magie was born June 19, 1872. The Langs farmed and raised crops, stock, and their family on a farm south of Emerson. Watler and Maggie had seven children, Gladys Eva, Orville, Elsie Rosetta, Barbara Ann, Worley George, Roy Frederick, and Everett Walter. Walter and Maggie tried farming in Mississippi and during World War II, he worked at Douglas Aircraft in California. They always returned to the Malvern-Emerson area. When Walter and Maggie were farming south of Emerson, they were just a mile out of town until the bridge went out and was not replaced. They raised beef cattle, buggy anf farm horses, chickens and ducks; crops of oats, wheat and small amounts of corn. Walter Lang like most farmers of his era used clover and alfalfa and crop rotation to build their fields. They bought only those items that they could not raise. In later years, they lived in Malvern in the house her Mother White had built. Walter Lang did yard work around the town in order to keep busy. He built a two-wheeled bicycle cart with bed rails and wood to carry his tools and power-reel mower. This card still works in 1985. The metal rails and welded pipe handle are the original parts and wood and wheels have not stood the test of time. Annie or Maggie died August 12, 1952. Walter lived until July 9, 1964.
