He was 70. Deputy District Coroner Humberto M. Rendon said Friday night that Boaz died of a self-inflicted gunshot to his head. Police said Boaz lived at 2801 Moundview. As "Bozo," Boaz appeared on television and made public appearances throughout the northeast Kansas area. He started his entertainment career in 1929, with a radio show on WIBW Radio, Topeka. He also sang under the stage name of "Eddie Patrick, the Rolling Stone" for 25 years over WIBW radio, retiring in 1957. He had frequently entertained in hospitals and nursing homes as "Bozo." He acquired his clown name from the original "Bozo," who traveled with the Ringling Brothers Barnum and Bailey Circus. The original Bozo, Boaz once said, offered his stage name to the Topekan while on his deathbed a half century ago. Edwin Martin Boaz was born on Jan. 1, 1909, at Belpre, the son of Joseph and Jennie Boaz, and lived in Topeka most of his life. He was married to Margaret Emery on May 1, 1961, at Miami, Okla. She survives. Other survivors include a son, Pat Boaz; two stepsons, Roger Currier, 307 Yorkshire, and William Auld, Denver; three brothers, Clifford Boaz and Aubrey Boaz, both of Bellflower, Calif., and Rodney Boaz, Monterey, Calif.; four grandchildren, and a great-grandchild. Mr. Boaz donated his body to Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Newcomer-Diffenderfer Funeral Home, Topeka. Memorial contributions may be made to the Kansas Heart Association, 5229 W. 7th, 66604.
