Vesta Roceil Durbin, daughter of Eihu and Eurana Chaney, was born December 29, 1891 on a farm south of Emerson. She passed away December 21, 1960, at the age of 68 years. She grew to young womanhood in that area and was united with the First Baptist Church of Emerson. She was graduated from the Emerson High School and studied for a year at the old Tabor College. She taught in the Mills County Country Schools until she was married. She was united in marriage to Orville Durbin, December 18, 1912. To this union was born a daughter, Mildred, who died in infancy, and one son, Ivan, who still lives on the family farm at Hastings. After moving from the farm to Malvern in 1941, she moved her church membership to the Malvern Baptist Church. She continued her activities with the church and its organizations. She was active in the Federated Women's Club in Emerson since its early organization and enjoyed all the fellowship. Mrs. Durbin is survived by her husband Orville, son Ivan and daughter-in-law fly; two granddaughters, Mrs. Bill Douglas, Emerson, and Christine, Hastings, three great grandchildren, Cathy, Christopher, and Billy; one sister, Mrs. G. E. Hascall, Emerson; two nephews and a great number of friends. One sister, Jessie Eaton preceded her in death. Malvern Leader, December 29, 1960, page 9
