It is possible that the census enumerator made an error in listing the family members, and correcting it may not have been feasible once the census was published. It is possible that the census enumerator made an error in listing the family members, and correcting it may not have been feasible once the census was published. At this time, this memorial will be made as if it is for a male, Elijah T. Oliver, pending any clarification or documentation to the contrary. Unfortunately Iowa did not have birth & death records mandated until 1880, so official records do not exist to clarify this name and gender easily. The middle initial "T" may well stand for "Towne", based on his mother's maiden name (assuming this was a son). Using the maiden name of the mother for the middle name was common in the 1800's for sons; less common for daughters, but not unheard of either. The headstone inscription, however, only uses the middle initial "T", so this memorial is made using that, pending any clear documentation showing the name "Towne" for the middle name.
