Description	:	Note: John's birth location is listed in his obituary (see below) as Board Tree Tunnel, VA. There are at least a couple of U.S. Census reports (1910 and 1920) that list his birth location as West Virginia. Due to probably boundary changes that locatio likely varied over time so the location designation could vary at the time certain reports were compiled. Some family trees on Ancestry list the middle name as "Goldsmith", but there have not been any obvious sources noted to support that - the middle initial was "G", but beyond that isn't sourced with anything written in a... Perhaps a family bible entry? ------------ Fairfield (Ia.) Daily Ledger Wednesday August 29, 1934 Pg. 3 Col. 4 OBITUARY JOHN G. OLIVER John G. OLIVER, son of David M. and Jane TOWN (sic. TOWNE) OLIVER, was born in Board Tree Tunnel, VA., April 26, 1864 (sic. 1854), and passed away August 20, 1934, at his home in Packwood after an illness of several months. He came to this county when 1 year old with his parents and grandparents, who made the trip in covered wagons, and has made his home in this county from that time on living in this vicinity before the town of Packwood was established. Mr. OLIVER was married Sept. 17, 1879, to Winifred Lucy HOUGHTON, of Woodhull, Ill., and they became the parents of six sons, one of whom, John Calvin, died in infancy, and Clyde G., passing away in young manhood. The surviving sons are Henry A. of Fairfield, Ned G. and Fred D. of Packwood, and Ole O. (sic. "D" in other sources) of Chuia Vista, Cal. Mr. OLIVER was one who was one who was influential in bringing about the incorporation of Packwood and has been connected with every worthy enterprise of the community. He served for many years as a member of the school board and of the W.C.T.U. He united with the Baptist church in Brookville when a young man, but was instrumental in moving the Methodist Episcopal church from Pleasant Hill to Packwood and has been a member of this church and active in his support from that time. He was a man of most worthy character, energetic, industrious, a model in his family and as a citizen. Mr. OLIVER is survived by his wife who has been a most devoted companion during their fifty-four years of wedded life. Also by his four sons, twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. The grandchildren are John K. OLIVER of Miami, Ariz., Mrs. Mary PECK, Jean and Kay OLIVER of Fairfield; Anice OLIVER, who they have raised from infancy, Margaret Lois OLIVER of Packwood; Mrs. Maxine HUFFMAN of Miami, Fla.; Mrs. Agnes SCARVEY of Council Bluffs; Helen Marie and Winifred OLIVER of Packwood; Ruth Janette and Merle OLIVER of Chula Vista, Cal. The great grandchildren are Deloris, Henry and Harry PECK, Mary Louise HUFFSMITH, Norma Jean SCARVEY. He is also survived by three brothers, David M. of Fort Madison, Lucian of Des Moines, and Addison C. of Packwood, and many other relatives and friends. Funeral services for Mr. OLIVER were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church. Mr. OLIVER was past 80 years of age. He had been a member of this church for many years. He was one of the first members when the church was established in Packwood. Rev. I. R. Magers of the Richland-Packwood churches conducted the services. A male quartette composed of Ernest McCREERY, Ira DAVIS, Hoyt LUTES and Raymond McCHESNEY sang, "No Night There," "It is Well," and "God Will Take Care of You," with Mrs. C.C. McCHESNEY accompanist. The pall bearers included J.W. COWGUILL, Carl EDMUND, R. H. MYERS, E. A. HEALD, Arthur MITCHELL and Oscar STEIGLEDER. Interment took place in the Fairfield cemetery where other relatives are buried (sic. Evergreen Cemetery). Beautiful flowers adorned the casket and chancel of the church. Out-of-town relatives and friends included: Mr. and Mrs. H. A. OLIVER and two daughters of Fairfield, Mr. and Mrs. D. M. OLIVER of Fort Madison, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. COX, Mr. and Mrs. Fred KIRKLAND and Nyle BELL of WOODHULL, Ill., Mr. and Mrs. Ambrose PECK and daughter, Deloris, Mr. and Mrs. ROSS ANDERSON, Mr. and Mrs. J. W. FULTON, Fairfield, Mr. and Mrs. Ollie DAILEY, Batavia, Mrs. Dwight PICKEN, Cedar Rapids.
