His grandparents had moved to this area in 1882. Sidney was the eldest son of Albert A. (1865~1947) and Eva Montgomery Hulsebus (1874~1906). His mother died of T.B. when he was 12 years old. Read More	from "1882~1982 Defiance (Iowa) Century Review" SIDNEY AND ELLA HULSEBUS Sidney Hulsebus was born February 16, 1895 on a farm north of Defiance. His grandparents had moved to this area in 1882. Sidney was the eldest son of Albert A. (1865~1947) and Eva Montgomery Hulsebus (1874~1906). His mother died of T.B. when he was 12 years old. Sidney attended Defiance Public School. He worked on his father's farm and also worked as lineman for the telephone company. On December 14, 1917, at Platte County, Nebraska, Sidney married Ella Husmann. She was born February 22, 1900, and her parents were Gerd, born 1854, and Antje Dina Janssen Husmann, born 1861, both in Germany. After living on a farm in Nebraska for two years, the family moved to a farm north of Defiance. In 1923, he purchased an implement business in Defiance and in 1926 a fire destroyed his place of business. The following year, he started a trucking business, hauling livestock to market. Five children were born to this union: Oliver (1918) married Helen Deane in 1942, three children, lives in Omaha. Bernice (1920) married Walter Krantz in 1937, one child, lives in Harlan. Stanley (1923) married Ruth Willadsen in 1944, one child, lives in Council Bluffs. Douglas (1926) married Alice Gibersen in 1954, three children. She died in 1964. He married Kathy Duit in 1968, one child, lives in Algona. Edgar (1929) married Carrie Brown in 1951, lives in Council Bluffs. All five children attended and graduated from Defiance Public School. Oliver served in the army in Germany, World War II, Stanley served in the Navy in the Pacific, and Douglas was in the army, in training, when the war ended. The family were active members of the Evangelical church and Ella was a pianist and in the choir . Ella was a member of Eastern Star and Sidney was a member of Masonic Lodge. In 1951 Sidney and Ella moved to Council Bluffs where Sidney worked part time as a taxi driver. He died in 1955. Ella lives at Council Bluffs. . .
