Has any woman in Colorado given more to the cause of democracy than Mrs. Ella Book, a widow living at 409 Calapago Street? In her window bangs a flag with five service stars in its field. Four of the stars are blue and one is gold. All represent her five sons, who put aside Personal interest and home comforts to serve their country. The gold star is for Clarence e. Book, who gave his life in the service. Clarence book, with his brother, Harold S. Book, enlisted in the Navy a year ago last June. Both boys were sent to Norfolk, VA, the following August and each put on different ships. Clarence was ordered on the United States steamship Michigan, where he was placed in the electrical department and lost his life last January when he was doing observation work from the cage nest. In some unaccountable manner the nest gave way and Clarence was killed instantly. The lad was just 21 years old, and in the employ of the Otis Elevator Company when he enlisted. Harold s. Book is now on the United States Steamship Minnesota. The youngest son, Arthur J. Book, 19, also enlisted in the Navy and has crossed the ocean six times since he went into service in 1916. David B. Book, the oldest son, who is married, went to Camp Fremont last May. Previous to his entrance in the Army he was a hotel clerk in Kansas City, from where he responded to the call of his country. Elmer J. Book, the second eldest of the boys, is in France with the Quartermasters' Corps. He was a salesman for the Swift Packing company when he enlisted last December, and went to France in April. All the boys write cheerful and enthusiastic letters home. That they are glad to be in the service and happy to play a part in the great struggle is the gist of their letters. Mrs. Book radiates the same feeling. Though not very big physically, she has a large amount of courage even though a 17 year old daughter is all that she has in the world. At a recent Red Cross neighborhood circle, of which Mrs. Book is president, one of its members remarked that she had a friend who was ill with grief because her son was leaving for France soon. It rested with one of the members of the circle to go the home of the woman and comfort her. Mrs. Book, with her five sons in the service, one killed and one in France, volunteered to go to the woman's house to comfort her and she did.
