Ethel May Manuwal passed away Thursday, February 24 2011, at the age of 86 years, 5 months, 12 days, at Cheyenne Mountain Care Center in Colorado Springs, CO. Ethel graduated from Simla High School in May 1945 and married Mr Samuel J Manuwal at her parents home in Simla, CO, on September 9 1945. They raised two daughters, Nancy Lee and Debra May. While employed at the Good Samaritan Center as a cook, laundress and nurses aide, she studied to become a Licensed Practical Nurse. Samuel passed away January 28 1973, so she sold her home in Simla, moved to Limon, CO and began working at the Evergreen Nursing Home in March 1973. On June 1 1975, Ethel married Ben August Lamm and moved to Colorado Springs, CO. There she worked at Johnson Food Company, Penrose Hospital and Children's World. Ben passed away December 25 1982. As a wife and homemaker, she spent many hours creating and sewing outfits for her daughters as they attended school, working very hard to be sure the dresses would be a surprise to them for special occasions. Each summer, she tended a large garden in order to preserve vegetables and fruit for her family. Her mother made a number of handmade quilts when she was growing up so she learned at an early age to love the craft. Later, as a member of the Helping Hand Club in Simla, she worked with a group of ladies in the community to make quilts for needy families. During her retirement years, she continued her life-long love of sewing, embroidering, quilting and cooking. Her legacy of over twenty handmade quilts are cherished by friends and family, including those she made for each of her great-grandchildren. Ethel attended the Evangelical United Brethren Church (which later became the United Methodist Church) and was baptized at an early age. Her love of the Lord guided her throughout her life and all who knew her recognized her for her faith and conviction. She was preceded in death by her two husbands, her parents, and brothers, Clarence Benjamin Pearson, Albert Lee Pearson and Robert Earl Pearson. She was survived by her daughters, Nancy (Delbert) Nicks and Debra (Ronald) Wilson; grandchildren, Timothy Nicks, Tracy (Donald) Talbert, Ryan (Christi) Wilson and Robyn (Gregory) Curtis; great-grandchildren, Dylan Nicks, Travis Talbert, Samantha Talbert and Aiden Wilson. She was eagerly anticipating the birth of her fifth great-grandchild in the up coming August. Also survived by sisters-in-law Roma Engle, Katherine Rich and Edna Cauling, as well as many cousins, nephews and nieces. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 1 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Simla, CO with Rev Charles Hawker officiating. Memorial Gardens Funeral Home of Colorado Springs, CO was in charge of arrangements. Burial was at the Simla Cemetery in Simla, CO. In lieu of flowers, the family suggested memorial contributions be made to the Good Samaritan Center in Simla, CO.
