IVAN DURBIN AT HER HOME SATURDAY NIGHT Services Held Monday For Pioneer Resident of Mills County The death of Mrs. Ivan Durbin, which came late Saturday night at her home in Malvern, brought to a close of a life of singular usefulness in Mills County. Mrs. Durbin, whose maiden name was Evelyn Valeria Dolph, was born August 3, 1868, at the farm home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Hiram Dolph in the south Grove neighborhood of Deer Creek Township. Mrs. Durbin attended the district school of the neighborhood and later, after completing her college work at Tabor and Shenandoah, returned to teach in the Mills County Schools. As a girl she had united with the United Brethren Church and developed a religious appreciation which was an inspiration to herself and to all with whom she was associated throughout her life. On March 25, 1891, she was united in marriage to Ivan Durbin, who was also a member of one of the early pioneer families of eastern Malvern County. For many years they made their home on various farms in Mills County as Mr. Durbin followed his chosen avocation and in each community in which they lived Mrs. Durbin took an active part in church work and community life and constantly performed various kindly services for those in need. Two children were born to the Durbin home, Orville H., who now resides on a farm southeast of Hastings, and Mrs. Ruth Cozier of Ottumwa. Both of them were with their mother during her final illness. Mr. and Mrs. Durbin, after many years of industrious work and prudent management, retired from the farm and purchased a large residence in Malvern. They enjoyed many pleasant trips together, having a strong interest in travel and in life about them. Mr. Durbins death came May 19, 1927, and Mrs. Durbin had lived alone since then. Mrs. Durbin suffered much physical misfortune in the past few years. A fall in her home resulted in a broken hip and this bothered her for many years.. She also was afflicted with arthritis and this made physical activity very difficult and painful. In spite of this she was exceptionally cheerful and enjoyed deeply the frequent visits of friends who invariably received much inspiration by her informed interest in affairs about her and her healthy and optimistic attitude toward life. She had not been well during the past summer and this fall. Early last week her illness became more serious and she passed away quietly Saturday evening. She is survived by her son and daughter, two grandchildren, Ivan C. Durbin of Hastings, and Frances Crozier of Brandon; a great granddaughter, Barbara Durbin; two brothers, Harvey Dolph of Newton and J. W. Dolph of Hastings; and two sisters, Mrs. Rachel Davis of Ames and Mrs.. Helen Summers of Strahan. Funeral services for Mrs. Durbin were held Monday afternoon in the Mansfield Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Evan R. Stroud. Music was furnished by Mrs. L. A. Talbott and Mrs.. F. R. Chantry who were accompanied by Mrs. I. L. Donuer. Serving as pallbearers were E. W. Knight, Weran Bowen, Lynn McNulty, Allen Wortman, P. D. Slothower, and Louis Knop. Because of the blizzard Monday burial was postponed until Tuesday morning when interment was made in the Malvern Cemetery. Malvern Leader, November 12, 1940, page 1
