(Hunter) Tatro Sept. 19, 1910, on a farm northeast of Geneva. He passed away on October 18, 2002, in Geneva, at the age of 92 years, one month and 29 days. He was one of a family of five children, who all preceded him in death. Duane attended District 17 country school through the eighth grade, and then attended and graduated from Geneva High School. While in high school, Duane especially enjoyed F.F.A. and boys glee. His love for agriculture and music stayed with him throughout his life. Duane and his brother, Donald, started farming before they graduated from high school and he farmed until his retirement in 1980. He was always interested in livestock. He raised hogs, fed cattle and sheep, milked cows and helped Hazel with chickens. He continued to help his son, Ronald, until health problems in the family caused him to quit. He was married to Hazel Hall on March 14, 1934, and to them three children were born. They lived on the same home place their entire married life. His last seven years were spent at Heritage Crossings in Geneva. Duane belonged to the United Methodist Church and received his 75-year membership pin in 1997. He was a charter member of the Geneva Community Grange, a 50-year member of I.O.O.F. Lodge No. 65, a member of the Rural Fireboard, and the Madison County Township Board. Duane had hope their retirement would bring more traveling. While circumstances didn’t allow for extensive travel, he and Hazel enjoyed going to California to see Robert and Mary Jane. A cruise to Alaska with Mary Jane and George was a highlight for him. In later years, he and Hazel went on quite a few day trips with the Ambassador Club. Duane especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s activities. He was a kind, quiet man, and a man who loved the soil and the outdoors. His daughter-in-law, Alice says he never said an unkind word to her. (Ronald says that didn’t exactly work in his case). He was well known for his outstanding “turnip patch”. It was nothing to have a 10 or 12 pound turnip from his patch to share with friends. His son, Ronald, has continued that hobby. At Heritage Crossings, he was referred to as a true gentleman. He was always very unassuming, polite and appreciative of everything that was done for him. Honesty and integrity were standards that he lived by his entire life. Duane was a family man. He was very proud of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by two sons and their wives; daughter and her husband; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. Services were conducted Oct. 22, 2002 from the United Methodist Church in Geneva, with Rev. Pat and Rev. Lynn officiating. The congregation sang, “America the Beautiful” and “Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee”, accompanied by Carolyn Lees. Special music was “Stardust” and “Bless This House.” Casket bearers were friends and neighbors.Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
