Frank and Anna Sernett lived in Winnesheik County near Spillville, Iowa until 1874. At that time, when Mike was 13 and Elizabeth was 11, the family moved in a covered wagon to Pocahontas County. This was in the month of October. The men went on ahead with grain, hay, and horses. Household supplies and cattle went with the second caravan. It took them two weeks. Halfway there a storm came up and blew the canvas off the wagon; all the bread, bedding, and other food were soaked. Elizabeth remembered specifically that all the children were crying. When the cattle acted up, Anna and Elizabeth had to walk beside them barefooted. After arriving in Pocahontas County, the family lived in tents while the cabin was built. Lumber had to be hauled from Fort Dodge. The cabin was built across the road on the west side from what is known as John Gunderson's farm. The original house is behind the barn on the farm. Julia was two months old when they moved." Obituary Frank Sernett Sr. Frank Sernett Sr. dies suddenly Friday evening March 25. Frank Sernett Sr. died last Friday evening at 6:48 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Julia Shimon on east William street. Deceased had been in good health up to the time of his death and the announcement that he was dead was a sad surprise to his family and friend. Mrs. Shimon had just stepped out of the house when her father entered the bedroom to get a bottle of medicine, when he fell over onto the floor. A little child of Mrs. Shimon, being in adjoining room went out into the yard and told her that grandfather had fallen down. When Mrs. Shimon arrived at his side he was breathing his last and soon expired. The funeral was held Monday, services being conducted in the Bohemian Catholic Church by Father Duda, and the remains interred in the Catholic cemetery east of town. It was the 27th day of last December when his wife died at their home in Pocahontas and since that time Mr. Sernett has made his home with his daughter. He was a native of Bohemia and came to America, in 1854, being married the same year after arriving in this country, at Hamilton, Canada. The family first settled at Dubuque, after coming to Iowa, then lived for a few years in Winnesheik county. In 1875 they came to Pocahontas county and settled on a farm in Center township. The children left to morn are Mesdames Mike, Tom and Jake Shimon, Mrs. James Dady, Mrs. Albert Chizek, Mike, Frank, Albert, and Louis, all of this county with the exception of Mrs. Chizek who resides at Garner, Iowa.
