For some time Mrs. Shimon has been afflicted with rheumatism, which has been complicated during the past year with dropsy. She has been a patient sufferer thru it all. All that medical skill and tender care could suggest was done for her. Mary Sernett was born in Dubuque, Iowa, Sept. 15, 1857, and came to Pocahontas county with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sernett, in 1872, thus becoming identified with the pioneers of the county, for there was not much of a settlement at that date. In January, 1880, she was united in marriage to Mike Shimon, who survives her. To this union were born nine children, Mamie, who died in infancy; Frank, of Britt; Mrs. John Herdina of Pine City, Minn., Mrs. Joe Borecky of Madison, S. D.; Mrs. Henry Stoner, Mrs. Harry Votluka, Mrs. Ivan Borg, Joe and Agnes, all of this vicinity. Besides these children and the husband she leaves to mourn her departure twelve grandchildren, three brothers, Albert Sernett of Crosley, Minn., Frank Sernett of Cedar Rapids, and Louis Sernett of Rolfe; three sisters, Mrs. Thos, Shimon, Mrs. Jas. Dady and Mrs. Edward Gehrig of Pocahontas, all of whom were present at the funeral. Frank Chezig and Mrs. Chas. Nedved of Garner, Iowa, nephew and niece, were also present. Mrs. Shimon was a home-loving woman, devoting herself to her family, and in all things an excellent example of Christian motherhood. She was a typical pioneer woman, whose services and hospitality were always available when needed. She has gone the long way, and her place can never be filled. Funeral services were held from St. Margaret's church in Rolfe Tuesday, her pastor, Rev. Geo. Theobald, officiating, and interment was made in the Catholic cemetery at Pocahontas."
