Shimon, Pocahontas and Gilmore City Druggists” “Funeral services for Mrs. Edmond Gehrig were held from the Sacred Heart Catholic church, Monday morning, October 24, at 9 o’clock and burial was made in Calvary cemetery. Mrs. Gehrig’s death occurred at her home here Friday afternoon, October 21 at one o’clock. At the time of her death she was 55 years, five months and five days of age. On Thursday afternoon, October 20, Mrs. Gehrig suffered a severe heart attack which was the first indication of ill health. Friday morning she seemed to be improved but early in the afternoon, was the victim of the attack to which she succombed. Before her marriage Mrs. Gehrig was Julia Sernett. She was the youngest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Sernett of Spillville, Iowa. On April 25, 1893 she was united in marriage with Jacob Shimon and moved on a farm four miles from Rolfe to make her home. Two children were born to this union, Albert J. of Pocahontas and Lawrence F. of Gilmore city. Mr. Shimon died October 1896 at the age of 29 years. Following her husbands death Mrs. Shimon and her two sons moved to Pocahontas, at which place she lived until the time of her death. On August 24, 1908 she married Edmond Gehrig of Varina, Iowa, and in 1914 one daughter, Eleanor, was born to them. Besides her husband, Edmond, Mrs. Gehrig is survived by two sons, Albert J. and Lawrence F. Shimon, and a daughter, Eleanor Gehrig, and a step-daughter, Mrs. H. M. Elsassar. Of her sisters and brothers living there are, Mrs. Tom Shimon, Mrs. James Dady of Rolfe, Albert Sernett of Crosby, Minnesota, Frank Sernett of Cedar Rapids, and Louis Sernett of Pocahontas, all of whom attended the funeral. Other relatives who were here for the funeral include Mrs. Frank Sernett and Mrs. D. H. Jackson of Cedar Rapids, James Dady of Rolfe, Dr. and Mrs. E. C. Kepler and family of Allison, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Chizek, Mr. and Mrs. Chas, Nedved, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Chizek and William Chizek all of Garner, Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Gehrig and Mr. and Mrs. John Chapin of Barnesville and Nickolas Gehrig of Varina, Mike Shimon and family, and Frank Shimon and family of Rolfe.” “Card of Thanks” “We desire to express our heartfelt thanks to our kind friends and neighbors for their sympathy in the loss of our beloved wife and mother. She married Jacob Shimon 25 April 1893 in Pocahontas, Iowa and had two children by Jacob: Albert and Lawrence. After Jacob's death on 1 Oct 1898, Julia married Edwin Gehrig on 24 Aug 1908, he is a native of Germany. They had a daughter, Eleanor M. Gehrig. Julia may have been a resident of Spillville (Winneshiek County) but in 1870 her family was farming in Chickasaw County, Utica Township. On her brother Albert's marriage record he states he was born in Spillville (1874). This MAY have been the birth place of Julia OR she may have been born in Chickasaw County. I have not found any birth records to support either county. On the 1900 Census record she states her birth is April 1878 (yes, 1878). According to her obituary her calculated birth date is 16 May 1872. Until further proof I have her born on 16 April 1872. Please let me know if you find better records. - Teresa Davis]
