In 1896 he bought out his father and remained in the drug store business for 45 years. He was appointed postmaster by President Harrison in 1892. His business of the "Old Round Corner Drug Store" was announced in the Placer Herald 04 Mar 1898 pg 5 col 7, and the "Stevens Reliable Pharmacy was in the news in the Placer Herald 04 Mar 1898 pg 5 col 7. He was named a "leading druggist" in the Placer Herald 13 July 1901 pg 5, col 5&6. His marriage to "Bertie Mitchell" was announced in the Placer Herald 03 Mar 1894 pg 5 col 7. Per his niece's marriage announcement in the Placer Herald, Fred was Auburn's mayor in 1914. The Evening Bee Sacramento, Ca, Monday, July 2, 1906 Page 6 SHOT TWICE AT ADOLPH WEBER Prisoner's New Guardian Is Man Who Tried To Stop Bandit That Robbed The Placer County Bank AUBURN (Placer Co.), July 2 - Adolph Weber is to have a new guardian. The continued ill-health of John Adams, his present guardian has made this necessary, as Mr. Adams has not been able to be away from his home in many weeks. The prisoner has wanted to make a change for some time, and Mr. Adams has also wanted to relinquish his charge. The new guardian will be Fred S Stevens, a well-known druggist, of this city, and Mr. Stevens' connection with the Weber story is somewhat romantic. Mr. Stevens is the only one who made an effort to stop Adolph Weber, the reputed robber, as he was hurrying from the Placer County Bank in May 1904, with $6300 of its funds in his possession, when Weber made his wild and daring flight through the crowded streets, and reached the hills in safety undetected. Mr. Stevens' place of business is directly opposite the bank, and by arrangement with the bank officials, an alarm bell was placed in Stevens' store, and also in J.G. McLaughlin's store, which was to be used in case of a robbery. These bells had often been rung by the bank officials, accidentally coming in contact with the button, so when the bell rang out on the day of the robbery, Mr. Stevens did not think there was a robbery in progress, but ascribed it to the usual accident. He went out and looked toward the bank, however, but could not see the interior, as the awning curtains were down. Just as he was about to return to his own store, a bearded man with a canvass sack hurried down the bank steps and moved swiftly along Main Street. A horse and cart were standing by the sidewalk, and the fleeing robber jumped into the cart and began beating the horse into a run down the then crowded street. Stevens, in the meantime, had rushed into his store and secured a shotgun which was in readiness for such an emergency, and returned to the sidewalk. The robber had gone some distance down the street, but Stevens' position was such that he could not fire instantly without endangering the lives of others. He secured a safe sight on the retreating bank robber, as soon as he could and fired both barrels, but Weber was at such a distance by that time that the shots were ineffectual, and only succeeded in riddling some rain pipes near by. The participants to this thrilling incident will be associated thenceforth as guardian and ward. Auburn Journal, 19 Apr 1934, p4 Within the story entitled "Robinson Traces Post Office History" The post office was always operated in conjunction with a store of some kind until Fred Stevens became postmaster in 1892. Fred's father, Solon Stevens, had been postmaster many years before him and wrote the first money order ever issued in Auburn. The Placer Herald, 02 Mar 1940, p1 Death of F S Stevens Frederick Solon Stevens, pioneer Auburn resident, died at his home last Tuesday morning, after a long illness. He was born in auburn May 23, 1964. Fred Stevens was probably Auburn's oldest business man, having connected with the Stevens drug store for sixty four years. He entered his father's store when eleven years of age. Solon M Stevens, the father, emigrated from Vermont to California via the Isthmus of Panama in 1855. He was a painter by trade but later became postmaster, druggist and Wells Fargo Express and Western Union telegraph agent. Fred Stevens was appointed postmaster in 1892 by President Harrison, serving four years. The present lock boxes and oak front equipment at the lower Auburn post office were installed by him. The elder Stevens issued the first governmental postal money order in Auburn, and Fred wrote out the last postal note. Fred Stevens succeeded to his father's interest in the drug store in 1896, and continued the business until last August when he sold to Carl Martin, the present owner. Fred Stevens was always prominent in Auburn civic and fraternal life. He served as City Trustee and as mayor of the city. He had been a director of the Placer County bank for thirty years. He had been honored with a 50 year jewel by Auburn Lodge No 7, IOOF and by Auburn Parlor NSGW. He was forty-six years a member of Eureka Lodge No 16 F and AM of which he was a treasurer for thirty years. He passed through the Masonic fraternity in all its branches including Ben All Shrine of Sacramento. He was a charter member of the down town fire company and of the auburn Rotary Club. Fred Stevens is survived by his widow, Bertie May Stevens, daughter of the late Berry Mitchell, a pioneer. They married in 1894. He also leaves two daughters, Olivia L, wife of John C Schuster of Petaluma and Madolyn Lucile, wife of Lowell Martin of San Francisco. Fred's father and mother and his three brothers, Clarence, Frank and Will, preceded him to the Great Beyond. Funeral services were conducted Thursday afternoon from the Masonic Temple by Eureka Lodge No 16 F and AM. Cremation followed at East Lawn in Sacramento. Auburn business houses remained closed during the funeral. The news of his death saddened the community in which he had been a prominent and beloved citizen throughout his entire life. Stevens was born in Auburn on May 23, 1864 and would have celebrated his 76 birthday in another two months. He was the son of pioneer parents, Mr and Mrs Solon Stevens who came to Auburn from Vermont in 1855. The Stevens family has been engaged i the drug business in Auburn since 1870 when Solon Stevens purchased a store in lower town. Stevens attended the local schools and began work part time in his father's store at age 11. He remained int his trade during the remainder of his life except for four years, 1892 to 1896 when he served as postmaster of the old Station A post office.Stevens took over his father's business on August 1, 1896. In 1918 he bought out John G McLaughlin and moved from lower town to the present location of Stevens Drug Store on Central Square. He sold the business to Carl Martin last August when ill health prevented him from operating it any more. In 1894 Stevens was married to Bertie May Mitchell of NewCastle in San Francisco and the couple just celebrated their 46th wedding anniversary this month.
