San Francisco Call, Volume 96, Number 69, 8 August 1904: Auburn Man Killed by Lightning AUBURN, Aug. 7. - Frank Stevens, a son of Solon Stevens, one of the pioneer residents of this place, was killed by lightning yesterday near Cripple Creek, Colo., where he was employed as a railroad man. The body will be brought to Auburn for burial. Placer Herald 13 Aug 1904: The news of the tragic death of Frank H. Stevens reached this city Sunday, and was a shock to the whole community, where he was born and grew to manhood. The telegram announcing his death did not state any particulars, other than that he had been killed by being struck by lightning. Word was sent to his brother, W. D. Stevens, who was some four hundred miles away from where his brother was killed, and he arrived here with the remains yesterday morning. The shock was a severe one to his family here, particularly to his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Stevens. The entire community, as well, share in the sorrow, as the decease was a young man pf noble character, known and liked by the entire populace. Besides the parents, two brother are left to mourn his loss - Fred and Will. The accident occurred near Cameron, Colorado, and is not an infrequent occurrence in that locality. Frank was firing on the railroad, and had just got through coaling when the flash came and struck him on the shoulder. The engineer was thrown from his seat, but the conductor who was with them was unhurt. Will Stevens is stationed at Grand junction, but was at Salt Lake when the message came. Barring a few hours stay in Cameron, he was traveling continuously from Sunday to yesterday. C. F. Boyer, Frank's roommate, accompanied Will and the remains to Auburn. The Funeral will be held from the family residence this evening at 5 o'clock.
