Placer Weekly Argus, Auburn, Saturday, 10-26-1878: Orange Blossoms--On Monday morning, bright and early, Miss Lizzie Hoffman was married to Clarence Stevens, our handsome young Deputy Sheriff and Jailer, by Rev. E. H. King of Dutch Flat, formerly of Auburn, the ceremony in this case being also solemnized at the residence of the bride’s parents. Almost immediately after the knot was tied, they took their departure for Sacramento and the Bay. The Argus acknowledges the receipt of a liberal supply of wedding cake from Mr. and Mrs. Stevens. To them we extend our hearty congratulations. The Funeral Notice stated he died in Auburn July 26, 1886, aged 32 years, 3 months and 28 days. Friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral this afternoon at two o'clock. No flowers. Dated Tuesday July 27, 1886. His death was announced in the Placer Herald, 31 July 1886 page 5 col 3. Placer Herald 31 July 1886, pg 5 col 3: DIED In Auburn, July 26, 1886, Clarence C. Stevens, oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. S. M. Stevens, a native of Vermont, aged 32 years, 3 months and 28 days. The Record-Union, Sacramento, CA 27 Jul 1886, Tuesday, pg 3 col 3: Clarence C. Stevens, a compositor [sets type] who lived for several years in Sacramento, but latterly has been employed upon the Placer Republican, died at Auburn yesterday morning of paralysis. He leaves a wife and two children. The Placer Herald 31 July 1886: We have to record the death on Monday of Clarence C. Stevens, son of Supervisor Stevens, and the eldest of four brothers. Clarence was well known and well liked among his friends and acquaintance and his sudden and premature death is a deep affliction to his family and relatives, and a cause for mourning among all who knew him. He had been ill for some time past, but kept courageously at his work in the Republican office until four short weeks ago, when he was obliged to give up and util the time of his death was confined to his home. During the last week he appeared to be convalescing, and there was expectation and hope for his speedy recovery, and made plants for a trip to the mountains to hasten it; so that when the relapse came which resulted in his death even before medical aid could be summoned, it seemed particularly sad and distressing. Mr. Stevens was from Northfield Vt. when very young, and was reared here among us. He learned the printer's trade and was employed formerly in the Argus office. For some time he has lived in Sacramento and worked as a compositor on the Bee. This spring he returned to Auburn with his family, and has since, up to the time of taking ill, been engaged in the Republican office. He had contracted malaria in Sacramento, and is supposed to have been lead poisoned from the types, which hastened his death, though the immediate cause was paralysis of the heart. In 1878 Mr. S. was married to Miss Mary E. Hoffman, of Auburn, who, together with their two little children, survive him. At the funeral, which took place last Tuesday, many friends of the deceased and family held their tribute of respect to his memory.
