Obituary, in part, published on Saturday, March 26, 1887 in the Kent News (public domain): George Bergen Westcott (sic) was... the son of Samuel and Mary (Buck) Westcott. His ancestors were among the first settlers of New Jersey. His mother was a daughter of Judge John Buck, of Pitts Grove, New Jersey; the Bucks being also among the earliest inhabitants of that State. In 1823, after having prospected the Western country, he came to Kent county, Maryland, accepting a clerkship in the store of Dr. George O. Trenchard in Millington; employing himself also in teaching school in the neighborhood for a time. After serving the county in various minor public positions, he engaged in merchandising; first at Millington and then at Chesapeake City, Cecil county, Md., until about 1832. Whilst so engaged he met his first wife, Mary Ann Hynson, daughter of Major Richard Hynson, of Kent county, Md., to whom he was married in the year 1831. It was due to this alliance, doubtless, that his final settlement in Kent county was secured. He removed to Chestertown in 1832 and continued business here as a merchant, conducting at the same time a number of farms in Kent and Queen Anne's counties, in which he invested from time to time his surplus funds until he became the holder of sixteen valuable farms. In 1852 he retired from mercantile life, devoting his time thereafter to the purchase and management of landed interests, and to the discharge of various public duties to which he was called in this county. He served as president of the board of County Commissioners in Kent county several terms... In 1847, on the organization of the Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Kent County, he was elected its first president, serving the company also as its secretary and treasurer for a number of years and as a director in its board almost from its organization... In 1850 the old State Bank known as "Farmers and Mechanics Bank" at Chestertown, was started and he was chosen its first president. In this position he continued until the old bank was merged into the "Kent National Bank" in 1865, when he was elected again as its president, and continued as such until the expiration of its charter in 1885. Upon the reorganization under the present title--the "Chestertown National Bank"--he was again elected president and continued to hold that position until his death... Mr. Westcott filled other positions of trust; becoming at one time president of a steamboat company, of an oil and mining company, and president of the Visitors and Governors of Washington College, of which board he was a member at his death. He served his county creditably in the Legislature during the most trying period of the late war--the sessions of 1861-62 and 1864-- having been elected to the House of Delegates both terms by a large vote. In politics Mr. Westcott was originally an old line Whig-- during the war he was a pronounced "Union" man, though a large slaveholder-- and since the war has been identified with the Republican party. Mr. Westcott, though originally a Presbyterian, has for more than forty years past been a member of the Protestant Episcopal Church, and worshipped at the old P. E. Church in this town. He was a member of the vestry at his death...The funeral services were held on Tuesday last at the Immanuel P. E. Church in this town, Rev. S. C. Roberts, pastor, officiating... The officiating pall-bearers were Messrs. Richard Hynson, Thomas W. Eliason, T. DeC. Ruth, Wm. D. Barchinal, Jos. Peterson, W. S. Walker, Colin F. Stam and Harry Rickey.
