Shaw, pioneer resident of easter Mills County, passed away at the home of his son, Alfred, on the old home farm southeast of Hastings, Thursday afternoon, January 24, following a brief two weeks illness. He was past 89 years of age and had been in usual good health up to the time of his last illness, bright and alert in his mind and taking a deep interest in passing events. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 1:30 in the Methodist Church in Hastings and were largely attended for he was well and widely known. Rev. L. e. Ripley, the pastor conducted the services and preached the sermon taking for his theme, "Crossing the Bar," from Tennyson's well known poem. A male quartet, Ira Turner, Charley Anderson, Robert Honeyman, and Billy Ripley, with Mrs. Honeyman as accompanist, sand, "He Leadeth Me" and "Abide with Me." and Mr. Honeyman sang the solo, "Face to Face." Flowers were in charge of Mrs. Fred Priest and Mrs. W. S. Young. Burial was in the Malvern Cemetery by the side of his wife who preceded him a few years ago. The pall bearers were Fred Newell, Fred Priest, N. W. Colling, C. W. Moore, Frank Shook, and W. S. Young. George E. Shaw was born October 24, 1845 in Danville, Province of Quebec, Canada. He was a son of Joseph and Caroline Shaw. At the age of 18 years he left Canada locating in the New England states, where he spent six years. He came to Omaha in 1869, where he was employed in the Union Pacific Railroad shops. He was a carpenter and worked at building depots through the west as far as Ogden, Utah, and witnessed the competion of the Union Pacific Railroad. He was married January 2, 1872 to Miss Augusta McGee in Council Bluffs, Iowa. They came at that time to their farm south of Hastings, where they resided until the spring of 1906, when they moved to Hastings. Mrs. Shaw preceded him in death in 1922. He continued to live in Hastings until January 1928, when he went to live with his son, Alfred, where he spent his remaining days. Mr. Shaw was converted at an early age and was an active worker in the Sunday school and church as long as his yealth would permit. He organized the first Sunday School at old South Grove school house, a community school, and also assisted in the organization of the first Epworth League in the Asbury Church. He was always kindly toward those in unfortunate circumstances and did many kindly deeds for those people in a quiet unassuming way. Mr. Shaw was always greatly interest in civic and national affairs and even in his last years he continued to be interested and followed closely national events. He was a great leader and had an unusual appreciation and understanding of good literature. Having traveled extensively, he was a very interesting conversationalist and conversed interesting on all subjects. He leaves to mourn his death, his children, Frank E. and Mrs. W. C. Nims of Red Oak, Fred D. and Mrs. C. H. McLain of Elliott, Charles W. and Mrs. Stewart Honeyman of Emerson, Ben W. and Alfred P. of Hastings, and his granddaughter, Wilma Shaw, who has made her home with him since childhood. One daughter, Olive, passed away in 1916. Thirty-one grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive him.
