Some time in the mid-1850's his father (a dentist) moved the family to Leavenworth, Kansas. George at the time was a small boy, so he essentially grew up in Leavenworth. By the time George was in his early 20's, he was a merchant traveling through various Kansas towns, including Concordia, building a business.
