Description	:	Mary Josephine "Phenie" Truesdell was born in Michigan to Letitia White and Jesse E. Truesdell and, with the exception of her parents' adoption of a cousin Minnie Quick, Phenie was an only child. Her very early years were a bit unsettled, as her parents searched for a place they wanted to call home. When she was a toddler they were in California looking for gold, but soon they tired of that and eventually decided to settle in Concordia, Kansas. Truesdell and, with the exception of her parents' adoption of a cousin Minnie Quick, Phenie was an only child. Her very early years were a bit unsettled, as her parents searched for a place they wanted to call home. When she was a toddler they were in California looking for gold, but soon they tired of that and eventually decided to settle in Concordia, Kansas. By the time Phenie was 9-10, the Truesdell's were very respected Concordia citizens with a home just outside of town. One day in 1870 however, the Truesdell's physically moved that house 1½ miles into town, via eleven yoked cattle guided by 4 men. According to a newspaper article, the move itself took just 2 hrs, all the while young Phenie played "Yankee Doodle Dandy" on the melodeon inside the house as it inched along its route. Afterward the home was remodeled and became "Truesdell House," the first Concordia hotel (more like what we'd call today a bed and breakfast with a capacity for at least 8-9 guests), and Phenie grew up there as a very well known and respected young woman of the city. Her parents had brought the first piano to Concordia, and Phenie took every opportunity to play it (or any keyboard, such as organ) at church and other events. When Josephine was 16 she met her future husband George W. Marshall, a merchant who would stay at Truesdell House whenever he was in Concordia. They courted 7 yrs. In 1881, 23 yr old Josephine finally married George Marshall, by now a very successful businessman and mayor of Concordia. Together they raised 2 sons, George T. and Joe T. Above all else, it seems Phenie loved to travel, and in her younger years took many short trips around Kansas and Missouri to see friends but also later traveled to Colorado, Michigan, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Mexico --and even to Europe several times, including during WWI when she was called to Paris to help her daughter-in-law with their newborn while her husband (Phenie's son) Joe T. worked as translator for General Pershing. For decades Phenie enjoyed her travels and the life of a beloved and respected Concordia resident and wife/mother. She often entertained guests with dinner parties, or hosted club meetings and other affairs in her lovely home at 7th and Broadway; and at one time, she served on the Concordia Board of Education... At some point in her life Josephine was diagnosed with Bright's Disease (which is a kidney disease today called nephritis); and while it appears she held it at bay for a long time, in May 1920 she lost her battle. The photo here with family was taken just days before she left for California for some r&r, hoping to overcome the latest bout of the disease. She died there in San Diego just a few weeks later. She was only 61. Josephine is now at rest in the Concordia cemetery.
