Wahle, assistant general freight agent of the Santa Fe. Dr. George Sheldon Hogeboom, 27, Topeka dentist, and son of Dr. H.B. Hogeboom. Harold Broughton, 23, Washburn football and basketball star. Three prominent Topeka young men are dead as the result of a most peculiar motor car accident at 3:45 o'clock this morning. Richard Wahle, son of J.P. Wahle, assistant general freight agent of the Santa Fe was killed outright; George Sheldon Hogeboom, dentist and son of Dr. H.B. Hogeboom, died on the way to the hospital and Harold Broughton, former Washburn athlete, died at 9 o'clock in St. Francis hospital, when Broughton's silver anniversary Buick crashed into a house on moving tracks in the center of Fifth street between Lane and West street. The three young men were driving west on Fifth street at about 3:45 o'clock this morning. According to the marks of the skidding tires they did not observe the house in the middle of the street until after they had crossed the Lane street intersection. The marks on the pavement this morning indicate that the car was traveling at a high rate of speed and that the wheels slid nearly seventy-five feet before bridging under the house was struck. The moving planks, timbers of immense size, were hit with such force that the big two-story house was undermined and settled down on top of the automobile, crushing the occupants and bringing the car to a stop completely canopied by the building. (The following paragraphs gave the accounts of several witnesses to the crash. There were also short bios of each of the young men, and a separate article within, with the title Detour Sign Was Moved, which said the detour sign closing the road had been moved sometime after 10:30 p.m., and that "someone had played a joke.") Broughton was graduated from Washburn college this spring and had only recently accepted a position as basketball coach for Winfield high school for the next season. He had been a member of the Washburn football and basketball teams for the last four years and this year was chosen as a guard on the All-Central conference basketball team. He was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity and of the Sagamores, honorary organization. Death Car And Crash Scene A photo of the Silver Anniversary Buick with Harold Broughton driving was on the front page, along with a caption identifying it as the car in which Vice President Charles Curtis rode during the notification ceremonies in Topeka last fall. Under that photo was a drawing of the house hit by the car. The caption said it was believed the street lamp may have blinded them until they were too close to the house to avoid the crash.
