Last sad rights for our Loving Friends. Harry W. Kerlin & George H. Kerlin Harry W. Kerlin was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylvania, August 29, 1874, and died in Jacksonville, Florida, October 9, 1898, of typhoid fever. Aged 24 years, 1 month and 11 days. He came with his parents to this place in early boyhood where he resided until fall when they moved on the farm two miles out of town. On the 20th day of June he enlisted with I.N.G. of Nora Springs which after word became Company G. 49th Iowa Volunteer Infantry, and was taken to Camp Cuba Libre. at Jacksonville, Florida. About the 15th of September he was taken sick with the fever, was taken to the hospital on September 19. On Sunday October 9, 1898, just lacking three days of three months from the time he enlisted and went forth to fight for his country's honor, he died.. His body was at once prepared for burial, and a message conveying the sad news was sent the already bereaved parents, and on Monday J. E. Cole, of the same Company, accompanied the remains to his Rudd home, arriving here Thursday noon, October 13. How fresh in the memory of the hundreds who gathered at the depot at Nora Springs Junction on the evening of June 19, to say farewell to our boys, and as that never-to-be forgotten train moved slowly out from the station it was one universal "Good-bye and God bless you." Being among the boys, we can enter into the exact feeling of the departed on as the train would its way around the bend, carrying him from home, friend, and all that way near and dear. He heard the call for patriotic service and seen the cloud of war as it crept slowly but surely upon the horizon of our, the fairest country of all the world. He cheerfully march out beneath the stars and stripes and by so doing declared that if need be he would die for his country's honor. Harry was a true soldier, bearing like a man the hardships and trials of camp life, and died a hero, yes a hero, of his country just the same as though he had come to the death by a ball from a gun in the hands of the enemy. We could hardly in reason have expected all our boys to be returned safely. George H. Kerlin was born in Bellefonte, Pennsylania, October 24, 181 an died at his home east of Rudd, Octover 10, 1898, of typhoid fever. Aged 16 years, 11 month and 16 days. He came with his parents to this place when he was but one year of age, where he resided up to the time of his death. He had been confined to his bed since the 19th of September and all that skilled medical treatment and kind hands could do was done, but at the expiration of the 21st day his fever turned for the worse and death claimed him Monday night at about ten o'clock. It came like a thief in the nigh and took him who was so young and so promising to the realms of spirit life - to Him whose decree is an irrevocable mandate, but "who doeth all things well." It is with sad and heay heart that the editor of the Clipper takes up the duty of paying this last tribute to the departed friends and kind neighbors. Though we have been privileged to know these dear friends only about two years, we have learned to esteem honor and respect them for the true sterling manhood of which their everyday lives were exemplification. The announcement of the deaths of these young men on Monday last, was not only a shocking blow to the relatives and intimate friends and kind neighbors but has cast a shadow over the entire community. These esteemable young men were taken to be what proved to be their dying bed on the same day; they were afflicted with the same disease, and were called home to Him who gave them, only a few hours apart. They were so young, so happy, ad so promising, had been sick but a short time, and there are so many reasons why they should live as the world estimates such things that public was not prepared for the announcements of their deaths. Their loss is a crushing blow to the parents, loving brothers and other relatives, and the sympathies of the whold community have been deeply stirred in behalf of the sorrowing friends. Life on earth is short the prophet so declares it. He uses an expressive figure when he compares life to the grass that withereth and the flower that fadeth. Our own observation teaches us the same thing. The oldest find life too short for what they want to do. Gladstone was nearly ninety years old when he died. And he had accomplished wonders, but life was too short for him to carry out the plans that filled his busy brain. Lincoln bore the burdens of the nation through four years of civil war and then reached the place where he felt he could enjoy four years of peaceful reigh when the assassins ball laid him low. So with many others in life. Life is not only short, but uncertain. We see beautiful young lives fade as do the flowers of the field. We know life is uncertain so far as the aged are concerned. It is also true of the middle aged. It is no less true of the young as we seen in the deaths of the ones we mourn today. They were called away at the tie when they had everything to live for. Most certainly it is true that life is short and uncertain. But there are things that are eternal, things that do not wither as the grass. The flowers fade, but He who makes them abideth forever. The body moulders to dust, but the soul lives. God is eternal. God's word is eternal. It proclaims truths that are eternal. God's word declares that there is such a thing as eternal life, and ther is such a thing as eternal death, and exhorts us to choose between them. In this world of change and decay there is something to which the soul may cling. Companions of these loved ones who have been called away, this event impresses you deeply. It could not be otherwise. Two of your own circle have been taken. Two whom you have known so intimately have had to answer the deaths summons. We remind you that beauty of features, but the beauty of character We do not ask you today to take a gloomy and sober view of life. No, no, a thousand times no. crowd the most happiness possible into your life by seeking to make others happy. We would entreat you to avoid all the frivolities of life that prevent the highest development of the soul and which shipwrecks many that are week Live for a high and exalted purpose and see that your example is never a hindrance to others. We commend to the Lord those who sustain the closest and most intimate relation to the ones whom we mourn today. He knows every sorrow that weighs down the burdened soul's and he hears the faintest cry for help. Cry to Him in his time of need and He will not turn you away empty. We claim there are but fewer better characters than these. They are characters which we should cherish in memory, - the purest and best of God's people. The funeral services were conducted at the M. E. Church, of which they were both active members. Nearly an hour previous to the time announced for the funeral a large concourse of people had assembled at the church At a little before two o'clock, which was the time announced the bell began to toll as the hearses conveying the remains of the departed brothers, neared the church, one from the East, the other from the West, it was indeed a sad scene. In the absence of our local minister, W. H. Smith, Rev. Sheckler, of Nora Springs, assisted by Rev. Sanford, of Floyd, preached a very beautiful and appropriate sermon to the people who assembled to pay their last respect to the unfortunate friends. The floral offerings were many, and in harmony with the pure, sweet lives of the departed brothers They were furnished by the Lodge of Modern Woodman of America; the Royal Neighbors of America, and the Epworth League. The caskets were decorated beautifully with floral offerings which loved hands had brought as testimonials of their respect. The floral offerings as a whole were the finest we have ever seen. The hearts of the loving parents, brothers and relatives were heavy in their great affliction. Expressions of deep, genuine sorrow were heard on every hand. It was indeed a dark, sad hour. Fully 1000 people viewed the remains, after the funeral train, which was over a half mile in length, wended its way to the quiet cemetery of RUdd, to deposit the remains in their last resting place.
