Description	:	Hazel Marie Snider, the daughter of John Peter and Minnie May (Kemling) Silk, was born November 5, 1926 on a farm west of Griswold, Iowa in Waveland Township, Pottawattamie County. She died January 24, 2017 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 19 days. Hazel attended Alexander Country School and graduated from Griswold High School in 1944. She took normal training and taught at the country school at Nyman for 2 years. She died January 24, 2017 at the Cass County Memorial Hospital in Atlantic, IA at the age of 90 years, 2 months, and 19 days. Hazel attended Alexander Country School and graduated from Griswold High School in 1944. She took normal training and taught at the country school at Nyman for 2 years. Hazel was united into marriage to Lawrence Mewhirter and from this union, two children were born. They lived in several places in the Griswold and Elliott area, and Hazel worked as a waitress at a couple of different cafes. The family moved to Winterset, where she worked at Harrison’s. She married Carol Snider in 1969 and continued living in Winterset. Hazel and Carol did a lot of travelling around the country. When Carol became ill and had to move to a skilled care facility, Hazel was at his side every day. After Carol's death, Hazel returned to Griswold where she remained for the rest of her life. When Hazel returned to Griswold, she purchased a home across the street from the park, where she enjoyed sitting on her porch to watch the children playing in the park. She was a championship bowler, and she enjoyed playing solitaire, riding bikes, and golfing. Hazel loved visiting with her family and friends. In November 2016, Hazel celebrated her 90th birthday with her friends and family, including her nieces and nephews that traveled from across the country to honor their favorite aunt. Hazel was the last surviving sibling of the 12 Silk children. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, as well as her brothers and sisters: Lee, Harry (Jake), Marjorie, Russell, Doris, Dorothy, Frank, Norma, Harold, Elmer and Velma.
