Served on the Gage County Fair Board for 19 years and the Nebraska State Fair Board seven years. He became manager of the Nebraska State Fair in 1964. Under his management, improvements were made: 1974 – New Agriculture Hall; 1976 – Bob Devaney Sports Center; 1977 – new grandstand and race track; 1978 – landscape project; 1980 – new beef barn; 1981 – youth complex; 1982 – new horse barns. Family members include wife, Lorene Brandt; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Charles Decker, Lincoln; son and daughter-in-law, Henry "Rick" and Sharon (Semler) Brandt, Roca; granddaughters, spouses, Desri and Mark Gross, Heidi and Richard Davis; great-granddaughter, Effie Gross.
