Botker and Lennie Mae Church. She was raised on the farm and received her early education in Clarks, graduated from Clarks High School in 1932. Irene had one brother, Gilbert, who was nine years older than she was. She was baptized at the Methodist Church in Clarks on March 27, 1921. Irene was secretary/treasurer of the Sunday School for many years, played the organ, and helped with the church choir. Irene was the granddaughter of Rev. John Marshall, better known as “the traveling minister” in northern Platte and Colfax counties. He served the spiritual needs of the early day settlers in the 1880’s including the Elliott home. Irene S. Botker and Clifford F. Barnes were united in marriage on February 19, 1938. They farmed and rasied cattle until Clifford’s retirement. After several years of declining health, Clifford died on May 8, 1998. They had been married for sixty years. Irene married a long-time family friend and past co-worker, Hanson S. Elliott. Hanson had helped care for Clifford and helped Irene with the farm business. The three of them had enjoyed fishing trips and short travels together. Irene graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1964. Her teaching years included war-time substitute teaching for men called to service in WWII. Often, this was to fill out a semester or a year. Her full-time teaching was in Districts 27, 33, and 51. She also taught in Palmer, Stromsburg, and Columbus. Irene retired from teaching in 1977. Two high-lights of Irene’s teaching career included have a representative Bicentennial Flag from a school project on display in the Great Hall of Commerce Building in Washington, DC in July of 1976. This student’s work was stored in Washington and will be displayed again in July, 2076. The second high light was being one of ten United States history teachers selected by the University of Oklahoma, in the late 1960’s, to represent the States of the Union in a yearly pageant of the “Sound and Lights” of the Confederacy. Her escort was the Captain of the “Delta Queen”. There were over 9,000 in attendance on tours from 11 countries. Travels for college credit and escorting other trips took her around the world three times. This experience took her to nearly 200 countries and providences of the world, which aided her greatly in her teaching. Irene was a member of the Clarks United Methodist Church. Gardening, sewing, and travel were among the many things she enjoyed doing. In later years, she liked to visit casinos with some degree of luck. Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Hanson Elliott of Clarks. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her first husband, Clifford Barnes. Courtesy Of Soft Funeral Home
