Description	:	James reached California in 1851 and came directly to Auburn where he mined at Rich Flat and other early mining camps. In the late 1850s he secured a homestead about midway between Rock Creek and Dry Creek districts. There he devoted his time to stock raising and general ranching. By purchase of adjoining properties, at his death he left to his sons about 1,200 acres of land. Around 1857 he had married Miss Mary Conley who preceded him in death by about 11 years. James passed away after a brief illness of congestion of the liver. He was survived by...
