Crane Answers Final Call James Payne Crane, a native of Fort Benton, passed away at his home in this city at 11 p.m. Friday following an illness that has extended over a period of several years. He was stricken with a heart ailment about five years ago when the family resided at Billings, which necessitated him resigning from the postal service. The family returned to Fort Benton in 1947 to make their home. Mr. Crane was out to several different places in Fort Benton during Friday, and the announcement of his death came as a distinct shock to all. John Payne Crane was born in Fort Benton on March 8, 1894, and was past 56 years of age, the son of the late George Crane and Mrs. Julia Crane, of this city. He grew up in this city and attended the local schools and about 1912-13 was employed in the book and stationery store operated by his father in connection with the postoffice which was then located in the building now occupied by the Ragland grocery. James later was employed as a postal clerk here. He was united in marriage on June 14, 1920, to Mary A. Coughlin, at Thermopolis, Wyo. They resided for about 27 years at Billings where Mr. Crane was employed as postal clerk in the postoffice there, a position he held until they moved back to Fort Benton in 1947, being forced to retire on account of his health. Since returning to Fort Benton he has been employed at the court house for some months and for the past several months served as city clerk having offices in the city hall during each afternoon. He resigned this position on account of his health late in July of this year. Mr. Crane was held in high esteem by all who knew him and his friends were only numbered by his acquaintance. His parents were pioneer residents of this city, coming here in the early days. His father passed away in 1913. His mother, who is almost 90 yeas of age, resides at a local hospital. He is survived by his wife; his daughter, Marlene Joyce, of this city, and Morris James of Great Falls; his mother, Julia I. Crane, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. A. E. McMahon, Los Angeles; Mrs. Brent Thomason, Detroit; Mrs. J. I. Kilroy, Fort Benton; Edgar Crane, Tacoma, Wash.; Ezra L. Crane and George W. Crane, Great Falls; Morris H. Crane, Pasadena, Calif.; and Chester A. Crane, San Francisco, Calif.; and other relatives and many friends. Funeral services were held from the chapel of the Benton Funeral Home on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Burial was in the family plot in Riverside cemetery. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of all in their bereavement.
