The following provided by Find A grave contributor "Cara": The River Press, Fort Benton, Mont., 2 May 1951 Resident Over 70 Years Passes Funeral services for Mrs. Julia Ione Crane, who passed away at St. Clare hospital early last Wednesday morning, were held from the Episcopal church in this city on Saturday afternoon at 2. Burial was made in the family plot at Riverside cemetery beside her husband who passed away in 1913. In the death of Mrs. Crane, Fort Benton loses one of its oldest residents and most highly respected citizens. She had seen Fort Benton progress throughout her 72 years of residence in this city. Mrs. Crane had been in poor health for the past eight years and had made the hospital her home since 1944. Julia Ione Payne was born Oct. 9, 1859, at Santa Fe, New Mexico, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Rufus Payne, early day Montana residents. The parents moved to Denver in the early day and came overland to Helena where they resided for some time before coming to Fort Benton to make their home. Her father operated on of the early day blacksmith shops in this city, and constructed the brick building near the court house, now occupied by Mrs. James Crane, which was for many years occupied by the deceased. She was united in marriage to George W. Crane at Clancy, Mont., on Feb. 14, 1877, and two years later they came to Fort Benton to make their home. The husband passed away in 1913 and except for several visits during winter months with her children, Mrs. Crane has continuously lived here since 1879. Mr. Crane engaged in the clothing and grocery business after moving here. He served for 12 years as mayor and served as postmaster and operated a news stand and store for a number of years. She is survived by the following children: Edgar R. Crane, Tacoma, Wash; Ezra L. Crane, Great Falls; George W. Crane, Great Falls; Julia I. Kilroy, Billings; Florence E. McMahon, Los Angeles; Morris H. Crane, Pasadena, Calif.; Gladys E. Thomason, Detroit, Mich.; and Chester A. Crane, San Diego, Calif. Also surviving are a sister, Mrs. Alta Blacker, Ogden, Utah; ten grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and other relatives and a host of friends. Pall bearers were old time friends of the family. The relatives have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in the death of a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and sister, and Fort Benton has lost a highly respected and loved citizen.d A Grave contributor "Cara":
