Description	:	James Wesley Betts Jr., age 93, passed away December 31, 2013. James was born in Omaha, Neb., on October 7, 1920. James, better known as "Tib", grew up in Omaha and Council Bluffs, where he attended school and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, before joining the U.S. Marine Corps before and during World War II from 1942-1946. He served in Cuba, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa, preparing to fight in Japan when the war ended. James, better known as "Tib", grew up in Omaha and Council Bluffs, where he attended school and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression, before joining the U.S. Marine Corps before and during World War II from 1942-1946. He served in Cuba, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa, preparing to fight in Japan when the war ended. After completing his military service, he returned to Council Bluffs to marry his beloved fiancée, Charlene Penry, and began careers at Griffin Pipe Co., smelting company, flour mill, and eventually UPRR where he retired at age 65 as a welder. During his working years, he raised two children, was very active in the Masonic Lodge, serving several years as Master of Excelsior Lodge, and enjoyed camping, Nebraska Football, reading, and gardening. After retiring he and Charlene became winter snowbirds in Harlingen, Texas where they made many friends, eventually buying a permanent home so they could live in warm weather year-round. However after 14 years Tib became homesick for his family and sold their home in Texas and returned to Council Bluffs. He resumed his hobbies until health problems necessitated his and Charlene's move to assisted living and later St. Joe's Villa in Omaha. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Wesley Betts Sr. and Ruth Betts; and siblings, Charles Betts, Betty Dalton, Robert Betts, Katherine Skinner; half sister, Princella Thomas; half brother, Andy Thomas; son-in-law, Roderick Hunt. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Charlene; children, James Wesley Betts III and wife, JoAnn and Rebecca Hunt; grandchildren, Malinda Davis, Curtis Betts, and James Weber Betts; 5 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; sister, Avis Buckingham; and extended family.
