Mrs. Jemima Butterfield (nee Pillers) was born in Washington County, Pennsylvania, April 7, 1815; died February 27, 1906; aged 90 years, 10 months and 20 days. While she attained to this remarkable old age, her physical vitality and mental vigor were sufficient to have enabled her to round out a century, had no accident befallen her. But nine days before her death, she stepped out into the yard, and there being a light snow on the ground, she slipped and fell, breaking her left hip and incurring other injuries. She was carried to the house and everything possible done to ease her suffering, but the misfortune terminated her earthy existence. If her ance try the writer learned years ago from the deceased herself the following facts; Her grandfather, John Pillers, was a Pennsylvania German who traveled by boat down and up the Ohio and Mississippi rivers to and from New Orleans. His family consisted of six children named as follows: William, Samuel, Daniel, Polly, Becky and Sally. Daniel, Mrs. Butterfield's father, was born in Washington County, Pa., July 15, 1788. Here he was married to Nancy Chambers, who was a first cousin of President Buchanan. Her mother's maiden name was Peggy Buchanan, who married Stephen Caldwell, and they had three children--Stephen, Robert and Elizabeth. Mr. Caldwell died and the widow married James Chambers, a native of Ireland, who had also been married before, and by this last marriage four children were born--David, Catherine, Isabel and Nancy. The subject of our sketch removed with her parents when she was about two and one half years old, in 1817, to what is now Perry Township, Carroll County, Ohio, where she resided the rest of her life. They "entered" 160 acres of land near Palermo, part of which is now owned by James Brackin. They lived about six years where Mr. Brackin does, then twenty years where William Barnhouse now lives, and again for years where Frank Brooks resides. Mr. and Mrs. Pillers lived several years in old age at Bethel in Orange Township, but later bought property in New Hagerstown, where after only five week's residence Mr. Pillers died of Typhoid fever July 31, 1863, aged 75 years and 16 days. He was a shoemaker and possessed a strong vital temperament. His aged wife succeeded him December 10, 1878, aged 89 years and 6 months. Mrs. Butterfield had two older sisters born in Pennsylvania, Peggy (who became Mrs. Sheridan) and Hetty (Mrs. Shuman). Her brothers and sisters born in Ohio were: Albert, Lydia (Mrs. Warner), James, Nancy (who was not married), Daniel (who died young), Polly (Mrs. Wolf and Mrs. Gamble), and Catherine (Mrs. Tope, the writer's mother)--ten in all, and all deceased except James who is in fair health at nearly 86. She was married to John Butterfield in 1841, to which union were born eight children--three sons and five daughters, of whom one son and four daughters, with her husband, preceded her to the great beyond. Those living are Daniel, a resident of Iowa; Mrs. Mary M. Thompson of Scio; and Albert with whom their mother made her home previous to her death. She was also a step-mother to three sons, one of whom has gone before; the others are John, of Pana, Illinois and Seth of near Palermo. She leaves 25 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren. "Aunt Mima," as she was familiarly called, joined the Presbyterian church at New Hagerstown at the age of 16, and was a faithful and consistent member for 75 years. Her schooling was all obtained in the subscription schools, and when a young woman she taught two or three terms of such schools. She was tall, of good size, and for a woman possessed a marked degree of motive temperament, with admits characteristics of talent. She had a most remarkable memory and mind in general. What a wonderful sweep of human experience! What a long play on this mundane stage of action--and yet so soon over! What a vast stretch of earnest, active usefulness, interspersed with joys and sorrows! The funeral services were held March 1, at 10 a.m. at the residence and subsequently at Mt. tabor church, conducted by Rev. C. O. Hastings of New Hagerstown. Rev. Hastings used no particular text but referred to a number of the quotations from scripture by the deceased in her suffering, and commented on them in a practical way, as well as upon the lessons of her pious life. At both places a large concourse of people took their last leave of the pleasant old face that seemed to have just fallen asleep, which in very truth it had. And they tenderly laid her aged body to rest in Mt. Tabor cemetery; while most assuredly her soul-self ascended to enjoyed the rich reward of the righteous in spiritual glory. M. Tope.
