From the June 1900 census: Dorothea Hansen was the mother of 5 children - 4 living. In August of 1900 Joe's brother Fred passed away leaving three boys in the family. In 1906 George was 13 years of age and Orval was 9, when a tragic shooting accident occurred at George's hand that took Orval's life. News article indicates that unbeknownst to George, Orval had placed a bullet in the rifle George was handling. Nearing adulthood, George began going by Joe Hanson and moved to South Dakota. He joined the South Dakota Army National Guard, Co. F, Reg. 4th Inf., June 20, 1916 but was discharged July 15, 1916 due to physical disability. By 1917 the year his father died, Joe had returned to Iowa to help his parents. He is listed as Joseph Christian Hansen in the June 1917 WW I Draft Registration, born July 8, 1893 in Council Bluffs, IA, service in the S.D. National Guard. He is married, living and working in Minden, IA, for his mother, Mrs. Dortha Hansen. Using his birth name of George Hansen, he was married to Miss Ella Johnson of Sanborn county, SD in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie, IA, on April 27, 1917. The 1920 census: Joe and Ella are living near her relatives in Sanborn county, SD. The couple moved to various places in eastern S.D., ultimately returning to Council Bluffs. In the 1925 South Dakota state census Joe C. Hanson is age 31, his wife's maiden name, Ella M. Johnson, married 1917. Five children were born to Joe and Ella during their eleven years of marriage: Doris 1917, Blanche 1920, Lillian 1923, William 1925, and Wayne Nov. 1927. The couple separated Sep. 25, 1927 when Joe left the family. Ella filed for divorce from George C. Hanson, May 25, 1928 in Pottawattamie county, IA, stating their marriage date and place and names of their five children. The divorce was granted Jul. 27, 1928. Ella and children moved back to South Dakota. Joe married 2nd to Lois C. Vanderpool and four children were born to this union: Joseph Christian Hansen, Jr. 1928, Lois Lorraine 1930, Bonnie Rose 1931, and Franklin Leonard 1933. Joe's first child, Doris, died in an automobile accident in 1935. Joe's name is listed on the newspaper thank you. In the 1941 World War II Draft Registration, Joe listed his half-sister Blanche (Hansen) Harrison as his contact person. Joe moved from Council Bluffs to Omaha eight years before his death. In Omaha Joe worked as a Stationary Fireman for the Omaha Street Car Company. Joe passed away at age 69 from a cerebral hemorrhage at Douglas County Hospital in Omaha on Apr. 25, 1963. He was buried on Apr. 27, 1963 at Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Council Bluffs, IA. Joe was married at the time of his death. Lois and Joe have separate grave markers next to each other. Meyer Mortuary of Council Bluffs handled the arrangements. Descendants from his first marriage attended the funeral from South Dakota.
