Harper, son of Samuel and Nancy Harper, was born in 1867, in Tama county, Iowa, and departed this life July 24th at his home in Glasco, at the age of 82 years, 10 months and 21 days. John Harper came of pioneer stock. His family left the security of an established community for the rigors of early day Kansas, arriving here by covered wagon when John was eleven years old. Of his two brothers and three sisters, only Will Harper of Glasco survive. In 1893 he was united in marriage to Emily Ott. To this union were born six children: Doss K., Willis, Merle, Marjorie, George and John. The first break in the family circle came with the passing of his son, Doss, in 1941, followed five years later by the death of his wife and companion of 52 years. In addition to his children, he is survived by four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. From his pioneer parents John Harper inherited the spirit of a builder. This manifest itself in the comfortable home he provided for his family and his interest in community improvements. In 1908 he united with the Christian church of Glasco, where he served faithfully in whatever capacity that presented itself. He gave unselfishly of his time and substance for the advancement of the Christian way of life. As he felt the sands of time running low for him, he mentioned that the lighted pathway which he had struggled to follow for nearly half a century was ending at the doorway of that mansion in the sky that was built without hands. Funeral services were held at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon, July 26, at 3:00 o'clock, with the Rev. Wayne Testerman in charge. "Sweet Hour of Prayer" was sung by Patty Carlile and Mrs. Bernice Harper. Patty Carlile sang a solo, "Lord's Prayer." Mrs. Edw. Berndt was accompanist. Pallbearers were I.O. Carlile, Lowell Nutland, Roy Beardmore, Jesse Martin, Sidney martin, and Jean Noel. Flowerbearers were Mabel Smejkal, Verna Nutland, Melva Martin, and Jewell Nelson. Interment was in Glasco cemetery, with the Griffith Funeral Home in charge.
